8 Emigrates over 14 years of age from the South, per education degree and region of origin – Years 1999 - 2003 (%) The evolution of internal migration in Italy between 1999 and 2003 Liverpool, June 19-21, 2006 Education degreeAbruzzoMoliseCampaniaPugliaBasilicataCalabriaSiciliaSardegnTotal 1999 No diploma or elementary school qualification14,714,217,216,319,117,321,515,917,9 Junior high school diploma29,133,24037,636,734,642,846,539,2 High school diploma42,335,436,136,834,833,229,731,934,3 University degree13,817,26,69,39,514,965,78,6 Total100 2003 No diploma or elementary school qualification14 16,715,515,815,519,614,816,7 Junior high school diploma2626,43632,230,129,538,540,734,5 High school diploma41,736,836,538 34,333,434,535,9 University degree18,322,910,714,316,120,88,510,112,9 Total100

9 Conclusions (1) The long distance transfers progressively decreased while the percentage of short-distance ones on the total of transfers significantly increased. The comparison conducted on the last five years available confirms such tendency to reduce the distance of migration. In the last three years, the tendency to a migratory loss as far as the South is concerned seems to be decreasing. The evolution of internal migration in Italy between 1999 and 2003 Liverpool, June 19-21, 2006

10 Conclusions (2) The Italian North-eastern regions have registered inter- regional balances that are among the highest ones of the country, after having been, during the important migrations’ decades, areas of emigration towards the Northwest and to foreign countries. The attractivity of the Northwestern regions seems to have strongly decreased. The central regions show overall constant levels of inter- regional migratory balance. The evolution of internal migration in Italy between 1999 and 2003 Liverpool, June 19-21, 2006

11 Conclusions (3) The most consistent losses of population due to South-to- Centre/North migratory flows during the 1999-2003 period mainly concern the younger age classes (20-29). The South has been losing evermore persons with a medium-high education degree. In 2003, about half (48.8%) of the persons over 14 years of age who moved from the South to the Centre-North had a medium-high education degree.
