Chinese students: 10 (male:5, female:5) Years to receive a PhD: 5-6 Basic requirements Minimum breadth courses (at least 5 covering 5 different areas) Depth courses (one prelim exam, which requires one or a few courses in a single area) Total courses: 10 regular + 10 thesis courses

4 PhD Recruiting Students apply directly Faculty recommendations
Recruiting by faculty at conferences Some faculty members take recruiting trips to China and India Requirements: TOEFL/GRE, GPA, reference letters, personal statement, school ranking Campus visit (domestic applicants), phone interview (some international applicants) Applications: around 125/year, admit 20-25/year with 5-7 international

5 Joint PhD Program with China
New this year Students are supported by NSFC Spend 1-2 years in US PhD degree will be awarded by a Chinese university Only top students receive NSFC fellowship to go to the US (or other countries) Funding level seems to be low. Shall we provide additional funding to encourage the new program? Tuition waiver? We have a similar joint program with a German university (Master level)

6 US Student to China ``2030 -Initiative’’ of University of Colorado at Boulder Globalization of education: Student study abroad program (mostly undergraduate) One of our PhD students has been visiting and working in China every summer in the Supercomputer Center of CAS (partially supported by US NSF)

7 Job Market Most go to IT industry (Google, Intel, IBM, MS, etc)
A small number of graduates go to universities Chinese students: some try to look for jobs in China, but most (probably all) stay in US
