Outline Project Summary Customer Needs and Engineering Specifications Functional Decomposition Concept Screening Concept Selection Architecture Diagram Process Diagram Risk Assessment Uncertainties Future Plans

Project Summary Objective: Design a device used to aid navigation for the visually impaired through unknown buildings

Project Summary Deliverables: –Interface to a computer –Mapping Software –Portable device using RFID for navigation –Place tags throughout building to create RFID map Constraints –Budget of $1500 –Battery Life –Range of RFID reader and tags –Cost of RFID reader and tags

Customer Needs and Engineering Specifications Identifies All Rooms –Device contains complete map of building 9 (nodal) –Number of Identifiable Locations Helps get out of classroom once in –Read Range on Tags Portable –Weight –PCB Size Easy to Use –Mean Learning Time

Customer Needs and Engineering Specifications Accurate Directions –Navigation Endpoint Precision –Repeatability of Directions –Location Identification Repeatability Hands Free Mode –PCB Size Device Reacts within a couple feet of location –Latency from Navigation change and UI update –Read Range

Functional Decomposition

Concept Screening IR –Can produce a value for distance but has interference WiFi –Can be used to triangulate position –Requires multiple WiFi sources Augmented GPS –Traditional GPS accurate ~3meters –Not enough time and very expensive Triangulation

Concept Screening RFID: –Communication between tag and reader –Passive tags: IC and Antenna Two RFID: –Two different range tags to obtain more accuracy RFID and compass: –Combine RFID and compass technology to improve accuracy RFID and IR: –Use both RFID and IR technologies

Concept Selection Chosen Concept: RFID and Compass –Retains proper orientation –Helps give accurate directions –Highest Cost Performance Trade Off

Architecture Diagram RFID Reader RFID TAG Microcontroller Tag Number INTERFACE (Computer) Compass Direction I/O Power Supply Hand Held Device

Process Diagram Map Find Next Waypoint Get current Location Get Target Destination (UI) Translate to Location UUID Build Map There yet? Tell User We’ve Arrived (UI) Give Directions (UI) Manual Data Entry UI Input Tag UUID# Yes No

Risk Assessment Risk ItemEffectCauseAction to minimize Risk Battery Life too short device shuts off during operation too much power consumptioncheck component specifications Inaccurate Directions User sent to wrong Location Inaccurate measurementsDouble check Measurements Lack of Customer Communication undesirable productLack of customersLook for more customers Time Constraint Device not completed semester is only 10 weeks long Re-evaluate deadlines during process Shown are the highest risks with an importance value of 6

Uncertainties RFID Reader Accuracy Navigation Algorithm Accuracy

Future Plans Decide on RFID Tags and Reader Decide on other parts Decide on Navigation Algorithm Prepare for Detailed Design Review
