2 Australian Leadership Awards – Fellowships Overview Aim – to develop leadership, build partnerships and linkages in the Asia-Pacific region ALA Fellowships – prestigious short-term placements in Australia for leaders, potential leaders and professionals in our region Fellows – undertake study, research and professional development programmes with host organisations in Australia Host organisations – Australian organisations implement Fellowship programmes and host Fellows in Australia

3 Australian Leadership Awards – Fellowships Funding & Priorities Funding – up to $35,000 per Fellow Fellowship placements – highly flexible, broad range of fields Types of programmes – regional development needs / issues relevant to Australia’s foreign policy agenda Priorities for Round 2 – international trade, security, pandemics, climate change (including clean energy) Programme evaluation

4 Australian Leadership Awards – Fellowships Host Organisations Eligibility – applications restricted to Australian organisations Types of organisations – academic, research, business, industry, media, NGOs, professional groups, governments Regional relationships – host organisations must demonstrate ongoing links with counterpart organisations in eligible countries Legal status – host organisations must be legal entities with an Australian Business Number (ABN)

5 Australian Leadership Awards – Fellowships Eligible Activities Academic – research, seminars, professional development programmes, professional skills training Professional Attachments – peer-to-peer learning, knowledge sharing, twinning, professional attachments, leadership and executive management training Combinations – academic study and professional attachments may both be included in Fellowship Programmes

7 Australian Leadership Awards – Fellowships Round 1: Outcomes 45 programs funded, 39 Australian Host Organisations $7.9 million approved – AHO Fellowship programmes 370 Fellows – from 24 countries Fellows per programme – 1 to 36 Average cost per Fellow $22,000 Length of programmes range from 1 week to 36 months

Critical elements for successful applications: Demonstrated counterpart organisation linkages & support Well-developed fellowship programme Strong leadership potential of nominated Fellows Relevant experience of Host Organisation Cost effectiveness – including evidence of co-contribution

14 Australian Leadership Awards – Fellowships Applications – supporting documentation Supporting documentation required: Letter of support– from counterpart organisation Fellow nomination form – for each nominated Fellow Curriculum Vitae – for each nominated Fellow Fellow workplan – if applicable

15 Australian Leadership Awards – Fellowships Selection Process Applications – assessed by AusAID against selection criteria Overseas Posts – asked to provide comment on proposals and Fellow nominations Final assessment – by External Selection Panel in Canberra Host Organisations – contracted directly by AusAID Ongoing monitoring and evaluation

16 Australian Leadership Awards – Fellowships Key Dates – 2007 Round 2 opens:1 May 2007 closes: 29 June 2007 outcomes:mid September 2007 Round 3 (anticipated timing) opens: early November 2007 closes: early January 2008
