2 Getting Started Initial pilot 2009-2010 Research and Grant Writing Foundations Community Partnership Central Bucks School District

3 Thank you Foundations Community Partnership Capital Grant $10,000 Our Proposal Central Bucks School District currently has 31 Autistic Support classes. For the 2010-1011 school year, it is predicted this number will rise to 33 Autistic Support classes. These classes span the spectrum and instruct students from grades Kindergarten through age 21. Students are involved in curriculum areas covering academics, activities of daily living, life skills, vocational activities, and social skills. Teachers in the CB Autistic Support Program are trained in applied behavior techniques for skill development and behavior planning, social skill instruction, functional and grade level academics and vocational planning. Pilot teachers have been polled to engage in a Tools and Technology Academy. These teachers will receive intensive staff development on the most current tools used to enhance skill development and independence for student on the Autism Spectrum. The proposal will include: Purchasing technology to be used with students in our district Staff development in the summer and throughout the school year for teachers On going support for teachers in using these tools directly with students Collaboration with families in technology Parent presentations and resource fairs for extended knowledge to families at least two times during the school year Collaboration with Intermediate Unit for Assistive Technology and Staff Development

5 The Research A sampling of the research support: Kathy Walsh Nufer column: Students with Autism Piloting Communication Apps. www.postcrescent.com. February 2, 2010 www.postcrescent.com Ms. Nufer observed the use of iPod Touches with students on the spectrum to be highly successful. These pilots have demonstrated that students can have the device individualized to meet their needs; they require less fine motor skills than a computer and have led to a higher level of independence for students. Kimball, Jonathan W. and Smith, Karl, Crossing the Bridge: from the Best Practice to Software Packages Focus on Autism and Other Developmental Disabilities, Vol. 22 number 2 summer 2007 pages 131-134. This article calls for a National Autism Technology Center to further explore the great success students on the Autism Spectrum have had using technology to enhance their skills.
