Welcome to Knoppix jlh

to Boot Knoppix from CD 1.Put CD in drive 2.Shut down computer 3.Start (boot up) computer

There may be just a couple of complications…  you MUST have (or configure) a system that checks for a boot from a CD BEFORE booting from the hard drive.  Source for directions to reconfigure on various systems: http://www.inventio.co.uk/gettingintothebios.htm http://www.inventio.co.uk/gettingintothebios.htm  you MUST adjust for expected screen resolution  Easiest to enter the following at the first prompt: fb1024x768

And then there aren’t the drivers… Much of your peripheral hardware will cease to be “plug and play” –You will have to tour the manufacturers’ websites for Linux-compatible drivers (if they exist yet) Since you may not have access to many of your secondary storage devices and your CD is being used for the operating system… –You may be limited to the storage space on floppy disks for your A: drive to save files.

So, with just a few minor adjustments, YOU ARE HERE!!! Click to select a language This gets you to the desktop

Okay, so how do I get from “HERE” to the application software? Actually, you don’t get this – it’s part of the “screen capture procedure

Access the Applications by using the pop-up menus from the task bar at the bottom of your desktop Start here for Windows-type applications

Web browsing with Mozilla

Word Processing Clicking on this button opens the word processing part of OpenOffice 1.1.1

Spreadsheets Click on arrow for other “Office” applications, like “Calc”

Presentations Click on arrow for even more “Office” applications

Taking “Screen shots” From the pop-up menu accessed by clicking on this button, select “Root Shell” Looks like this but in the middle of your desktop  Type “import whatever.jpeg”  Press “Enter”  Click on window you wish to capture

Screenshots, continued Click on “Home” You will see your picture files

Now the little problem of Saving Files Drag the file icon from the “Home” window onto the desktop Select “Move Here” from drop-down menu Files moved to desktop

And now to get it onto some sort of storage medium.. Drag these (individually) To here Then select “Move Here” from drop-down menu

Where did it go? Or how to see the contents of a directory To see what was (or wasn’t) saved to your disk, you must “mount” the storage device Go to Konsole/Root Shell At the command prompt type: cd /mnt/floppy Press “Enter”

Seeing and changing the contents of a directory or file Contents of root directory of a: drive To see the contents of a text file

HELP!!! Use the MANual From the command line in the Root Shell type Type “man import”

You can find help with ANY command Try “man mount”

You can save any OpenOffice files to floppy by selecting “Save as” from the “File” option on the menu bar in any program. You will – by default – be saving them to “Home”. Then you follow the “screenshot procedure” to get them onto a floppy. You can save any OpenOffice file with MS Office file extensions (MyFile.doc, MyFile.xls, MyFile.ppt, etc.) – just select the file extension you want from the “Save As” options. Other Miscellaneous Stuff
