Energy Environment & Sustainable Development Thematic Network on Energy in the Built Environment PROJECT SUMMARY DESIGN STUDY and EXPERIMENTAL EVALUATION of an INTEGRATED SOLAR FACADE Project Partners: CREST, Loughborough University, UK Hochschule für Technik, Germany Teulades i Facanes Multifuncionals S.A Spain Grammer GmbH, Germany The project objectives are to: improve the thermal performance of the ventilated PV façade at Mataró by the addition of solar air collectors to develop and validate a thermal model of the façade to develop and validate a thermal model of the library to produce design guidelines

Energy Environment & Sustainable Development Thematic Network on Energy in the Built Environment MATARO LIBRARY Public library in Mataró, near Barcelona, Spain. Building specification: building width: 39.5m depth: 32.5m height: 12.6m PV facade width: 39.5m height: 6.3m area: 250m^2 air collector width: 37.5m height:2m area: 75m^2 skylight: four rows (full building width) of 30 opaque and 6 semi-transparent PV modules

Energy Environment & Sustainable Development Thematic Network on Energy in the Built Environment AIR COLLECTOR DESIGN Designed for low volumetric air flow rates of the façade. height: 1.7 m width: 1.04 m channel width: 24 mm channel depth: 24 mm nominal flow velocity: 3.4 m/s nominal efficiency: 50%

Energy Environment & Sustainable Development Thematic Network on Energy in the Built Environment FAÇADE THERMAL MODEL Dynamic model based on one dimensional heat transfer and advection of ventilation air. Convective heat transfer coefficients given by:

Energy Environment & Sustainable Development Thematic Network on Energy in the Built Environment MODEL VALIDATION Measurements on Mataró façade:

Energy Environment & Sustainable Development Thematic Network on Energy in the Built Environment BUIDING MODEL Single zone TRNSYS model with new special type for Façade (including PV electricity generation)

Energy Environment & Sustainable Development Thematic Network on Energy in the Built Environment WIND PRESSURE LOADING Wind pressure loading can have a significant effect on façade flow rates. An experimental investigation was conducted at Mataró. Results:

Energy Environment & Sustainable Development Thematic Network on Energy in the Built Environment SIMPLE DESIGN CALCULATION Attempt to extend conventional U and g value analysis to ventilated facades.
