Università degli Studi di Roma “Tor Vergata” Facoltà di Ingegneria Corso di Laurea Magistrale in Ingegneria Medica (Presidente: Prof. Franco Maceri) Insegnamento di Tecnologie Chirurgiche Innovative (Prof. Francesco Rulli, Dipartimento di Chirurgia) A Dry Lab for Medical Engineers? francesco.rulli@ptvonline.it

What is a Dry Lab? laboratory that is specific to work with dry stored materials, electronics and/or large instruments, in which biological tissues (living or dead) are not utilized. “DRY LAB”

Dry Lab “DRY LAB” equipped workstations for practicing endoscopic techniques realistic setting phantoms and organ models

necessary to design a minimally invasive surgery training program Why a Dry Lab? gain, certify and improve the expertise, along with a proper case load

Many institutions, universities, centres of excellence are equipped with dry labs in order to provide a teaching, training and evaluation instrument to the surgeon, developing curricula to teach fundamental technical skills to surgeons in a laboratory setting. ESI Dry Lab, Hamburg, Germany

Importance of a dry lab for surgical residents Learn and practice basic skills in a relaxed and inexpensive environment Learn and practice basic skills in a relaxed and inexpensive environment Attain and transfer a basic level of technical facility from the laboratory to the operating room environment Attain and transfer a basic level of technical facility from the laboratory to the operating room environment Laparoscopic simulators Inanimate box trainers Computer-based virtual reality platforms Simulator-based curricula

Importance of a dry lab for surgical residents Training in a surgery dry lab provide mastery of basic skills that allows trainees to focus on more complex issues, both technical and nontechnical, in the operating room.

Laparoscopic column March 2007 Innovative Surgical Technologies course (Medical Engineering program) Surgical dry lab Camera and telescopes Endoscopic mechanical training systems Endoscopic instruments Ultrasound device

Dry Lab equipment: workstation Laparoscopic column: Laparoscopic column: CRT Monitor CRT Monitor Light source Light source Camera system Camera system 0° and 30° telescopes 0° and 30° telescopes Automatic insufflator Automatic insufflator Pelvic trainer Pelvic trainer Leg trainer Leg trainer

Dry Lab Activities Analysing devices in their working context Analysing devices in their working context Introduction to MIS (Minimally Invasive Surgery) techniques Introduction to MIS (Minimally Invasive Surgery) techniques Managing imaging system and instruments Managing imaging system and instruments Performing simple tasks on the workstation Performing simple tasks on the workstation Understanding technical properties of devices by using them Understanding technical properties of devices by using them

Why a Dry Lab for Medical Engineers? Dry Lab improve the students’ knowledge of MIS instrumentation and techniques through hands-on experience Dry Lab experience Learning and improving analysis and management of laparoscopic devices Identification of problems “brainstorming” Developing better devices

Galatà Training and Teaching: 2007 Study Hands-on exercises performed on a simulator Eleven Medical Engineering students were trained to perform a sequence of Clipping and Cutting standardized drills Carring out specimen with endobag Positioning a needle Cutting a paper Intra – corporeal Knotting

Conclusions Improve the students’ knowledge of MIS instrumentation Dry Lab experience Learning and improving analysis and management of laparoscopic devices Identification of problems Developing better devices
