2 The Project: $25M library and classroom addition 1) Private fundraising matched by state 2) Initial Program by School of Architecture a) Space data b) 5 yr. Campus plan gave community focus 3) Tsoi Kobis—concept, benchmarking, design 4) Ponikvar—local architect, construction

3 Planning Assumptions Library built first, moved Library in auditorium space during construction Existing library/Classrooms gutted and rebuilt

4 Thinking Outside Box 5 mos. into project ABA inspector suggested library move to temp quarters, build classroom towers, gut current classrooms and attach to renovated library Cost-benefit showed project speeded up by 4 mos.-1 yr.

5 G’ville’s Largest Floating Crap Game! Library moved out 3d floor library renovated for technology Displaced faculty moved into technology Technology moved to computer lab Administration moved to trailer L. Rev, to faculty dining room Journals to cafeteria, etc Study space rented from neighboring church

7 Be Careful What You Wish For! Bring design and construction team, code compliance in on process BEFORE leasing 1) $25k estimate in renovation became $100k+ 2) Data drops, sprinklers, close ceilings, fire doors, alarms, partitions, ADA 3) New dean’s fundraising challenge

8 Gown Meets Town: Zoning Variance Required U planner was former city planner, knew where bodies buried Local fire marshal, formerly with UF, obstructed County limited to 9 pm, 2 yrs. temporary approval, 100 cars

9 What We Wish We Had Known Consider temporary space option upfront, add 10% to projected costs Lock in unit prices—2 hurricanes, building boom inflationary, delaying Who will handle maintenance, security, utilities installation and maintenance, cleaning, trash removal? Argue that U should pay all costs saved by move Divide total project into smaller components to allow faster acceptance, move back

10 What worked Coordination with vendors—landscaping, chilled water digging, book and furniture moving simultaneous Communication with faculty, staff, students Let them eat cake—cookouts, parties, etc. to thank community for putting up with noise, dust, etc. Library in exile campaign Renovated stack area as study hall with borrowed furniture
