“…without a central focus on reflection, e-portfolios are in danger of becoming simply a collection of information rather than a mechanism for the development of meaningful knowledge.” Battacharya, M & Hartnett, M. 6 “In this module we had to complete a group presentation. It was an interesting experience and I learnt many things. While preparing with my group mates for the presentation I was very quiet. I realize that I really need to work on taking more risks and not be afraid of saying something wrong. The other students in my group would give their opinions freely. Back home in my own country, I don’t usually get nervous when doing group projects, so it’s not just about being confident. I think the reason I felt insecure was because of the language. I was always afraid I would say something wrong or stupid. I’m now aware that to improve my English I need to focus on speaking as much English as I can, and not worry about making mistakes”. Here is an extract from a student’s reflective journal. Highlight all the examples that you see as ‘reflective’. ___________ _______________ ____________________ _______________ ____________________ ________ _____________________

“We do not learn from experiences; we learn from reflecting on our experiences” (John Dewey).

FEELINGS/OPINIONSSELF-DEVELOPMENT NEWAWARENESSES COMPARISON AND CONTRAST MAKING CONNECTIONS http://www.i-to-i.com/the- meaningful-travel-experience.html

FEELINGS/OPINIONSSELF-DEVELOPMENT Enriching, wonderful, life-changing, rewarding, surprised, a shock. Likes and dislikes. I gained so much. More confidence. More tolerant. I’ve gained skills. NEWAWARENESSES COMPARISON AND CONTRAST MAKING CONNECTIONSA real sense of the local life It’s like … It’s different. A connection with others, with other cultures, with ourselves. Different values. Culture You realize how lucky you are. You see how the rest of the world lives. A global perspective I’m more appreciative of what I’ve got. It has changed who I am.

If we expand our idea of what reflection is, we can use the concept of multiple intelligences to ask students to: Kinesthetic Intelligence Create a drama in response to an experience Spatial Intelligence Draw a picture of the experience and tell others about it Musical Intelligence Compose a song that captures the mood of your experience Linguistic Intelligence Write a job description for the job/task you did Logical-Mathematical Identify a problem you had or saw and think of an effective solution Interpersonal Intelligence Talk together about how you felt before, during and after the activity Based on: http://209.85.175.104/search?q=cache:l3tRamTu4vYJ:www.youthservicecalifornia.org/resources/assets/Reflection.doc+%22a+concise+guide+to+r eflection%22+%22reflection+is+the+very+heart+of%22&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=1&gl=hk http://209.85.175.104/search?q=cache:l3tRamTu4vYJ:www.youthservicecalifornia.org/resources/assets/Reflection.doc+%22a+concise+guide+to+r eflection%22+%22reflection+is+the+very+heart+of%22&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=1&gl=hk
