February 19, 2008 FACET Review 1 Lab Overview and Future Onsite Facilities Persis S. Drell DirectorSLAC

February 19, 2008FACET Review2 SLAC: The Lab is Changing SLAC’s research vision is evolving dramatically. SLAC’s research vision is evolving dramatically. –The balance and content of the scientific foci is changing in substantial ways Photon science is rapidly expanding Photon science is rapidly expanding –After the B-factory turns off later this year, the major on-site accelerator-based facilities will be primarily serving photon science –A growing accelerator R&D effort will fuel future upgrades & new facilities Particle Physics and Astrophysics Particle Physics and Astrophysics –Will be based on program of accelerator-based, non-accelerator and particle astrophysics experiments  No longer be centered on an in-house HEP accelerator facility, requiring re-invention of our national laboratory role –Mid-term and long-term accelerator research will also be a continuing emphasis and strength of the program A continued vigorous program of accelerator research is an extremely high priority for the laboratory A continued vigorous program of accelerator research is an extremely high priority for the laboratory – –Essential investment for future of HEP and BES programs

February 19, 2008FACET Review3 Accelerator research directions Mid-term: broad strategy for achieving the goal of a TeV electron-positron collider Mid-term: broad strategy for achieving the goal of a TeV electron-positron collider –Leader on the development of the RDR for the ILC and continuing leadership in many of the technical systems, –Expanding a program of high-gradient research to include new x-band power sources as part of a collaboration with the CLIC program at CERN Long-term: Fundamental research in entirely new directions for acceleration techniques Long-term: Fundamental research in entirely new directions for acceleration techniques –Develop a basic understanding of ultra-high gradient acceleration techniques, including plasma-wakefield, dielectric wakefield, and lasers –Aimed at development of transformational technologies as the basis for reaching the very high energies demanded by particle physics

February 19, 2008FACET Review4 Accelerator research directions Upgrades and new directions for the x-ray FEL program Upgrades and new directions for the x-ray FEL program –Facilities for exploring enhanced self-amplified spontaneous emission –Electron source R&D for next generation light sources –Studies of collective effects, including space charge and coherent synchrotron radiation modeling –Exploration of rf cavities as beam modulators –Exploratory studies of ultrashort “single-spike” operation of FELs Opportunities for ultra-high intensity synchrotron sources Opportunities for ultra-high intensity synchrotron sources World-class facilities are the basis for these R&D directions World-class facilities are the basis for these R&D directions –FACET will be unique in providing high-power beams to enable far-field development of new ultra-high gradient techniques

February 19, 2008FACET Review5 Turn-on in 2009: LCLS will be the World’s First X-ray Laser LCLS: Linac Coherent Light Source FACET SLAC ACCELERATOR FACILITIES

February 19, 2008FACET Review6 FACET Project Hadron Production Facility FACET project consists of four elements: Accelerator Science Facility (ASF) (Sector 20) e + bunch compressor (Sector 10) Electron Bypass Line (EBL) extension to ESA Hadron Production Facility in A-Line to ESA

February 19, 2008FACET Review7 Accelerator Complex is Evolving LCLS Program LCLS Program –Currently in construction –Capability for early science in late FY09 –Completion of project construction in FY10 –Operations of 1/3 of linac (120 Hz operations) plus LCLS injector, undulator and controls systems; 4 experiments SSRL Program SSRL Program –SPEAR3 operations and scientific programs PPA Program PPA Program –Particle and particle astrophysics scientific programs off site –Accelerator Research on site  Operations of FACET and NLCTA facilities

February 19, 2008FACET Review8 Business Model BES Primary Stewardship BES Primary Stewardship –BES Supports Linac Ops (1/3 of Linac) –BES Supports Linac Maintenance (full Linac) –BES covers org costs and direct program support costs for Linac related accelerator operations: includes all major technical infrastructure at the laboratory essential to accelerator operations  Klystron, CPE, CEF, Scientific Computing Infrastructure –HEP accelerator based programs (FACET, NLCTA, ILC) leverage off BES base  Significant uncertainty in HEP use of core technical infrastructure (i.e. ILC)  Success of LCLS cannot depend on future of HEP funding to these departments HEP and BES share site-wide indirect costs HEP and BES share site-wide indirect costs This model ensures that operations support for LCLS will not be dependent on future HEP programs (e.g. ILC) This model ensures that operations support for LCLS will not be dependent on future HEP programs (e.g. ILC)

February 19, 2008FACET Review9 Operations Post 2009 SLAC has defined its operating scenario for FY09 and beyond SLAC has defined its operating scenario for FY09 and beyond –Detailed review by BES has endorsed the proposed model and funding level Budgeting and accounting structures in place to manage the transition Budgeting and accounting structures in place to manage the transition The business model and funding level provides an opportunity: The business model and funding level provides an opportunity: –A forefront accelerator R&D program can leverage off the BES investment –Allows experimental program (HEP & BES) that utilizes unique beams

February 19, 2008FACET Review10 Future Development of the Accelerator Complex Active discussion of strategic future of major elements of SLAC accelerator complex Active discussion of strategic future of major elements of SLAC accelerator complex –Focused on light sources Upgrades to LCLS 1 Upgrades to LCLS 1 –LCLS 1.5  2 nd undulator: soft x-ray  Hope for 2011 or 2012 start –LCLS 2  Higher energy  Would use at least 2/3 of linac –Interferes with FACET  Timescale ‘not before 2015’ –Time early probably 2017-2018 –Requires gun development to become a reality

February 19, 2008FACET Review11 Future Development of the Accelerator Complex PEP 2.5 PEP 2.5 –Add beamlines to existing ring –Unique SR source leveraging of HEP investment in PEP-II –Very early stages of discussion –Timeline???? As BES ramps up investments in accelerator R&D, SLAC will strive to broaden accelerator research program As BES ramps up investments in accelerator R&D, SLAC will strive to broaden accelerator research program –Now delayed until 2009

February 19, 2008FACET Review12 Summary SLAC in time of transition SLAC in time of transition –Dramatic changes from past –Exciting opportunities for the future SLAC has defined its operating scenario for FY09 and beyond SLAC has defined its operating scenario for FY09 and beyond –Detailed review by BES has endorsed the proposed model and funding level FACET an important element of continued rich and diverse accelerator research program at the lab FACET an important element of continued rich and diverse accelerator research program at the lab –Unique facility for accelerator research
