4 Huruf “Serif-Transitional” Transitional fonts fit somewhere in between moderns and old style fonts. Many of the transitionals have the same kind of readability as the old styles. However, they are based on slightly later design. While a move in the direction of the moderns may be visible in these fonts, they are still much more subtle than the moderns.

6 Caslon Caslon, William, English type designer, b. Worcestershire. He worked first in London as an engraver of gunlocks, then set up his own foundry in 1716. Caslon's individual letters are less impressive than those of Baskerville and Giambattista Bodoni, but their regularity, legibility, and sensitive proportions constituted a remarkable achievement in design. His typefaces were used for most important printed works from c.1740 to c.1800. One such example is the first printed version of the United States Declaration of Independence. Some Caslon types are still in use. 7. Born 1692 in Cradley, Worcestershire, England, died 1766 in Bethnal Green, England – engraver, type founder, type designer.

8 Caledonia William A. Dwiggins designed Caledonia for Linotype in 1939. The Bulmer types gave Caledonia “the liveliness of action the quality is in the curves, the way they get away from the straight stems with a calligraphic flick, and in the nervous angle on the underside of the arches as they descend to the right.” The result, Caledonia (the Latin name for Scotland), is one of the most widely used book types of all time. In the late 1980s, Linotype released New Caledonia, removing some of the constraints placed on the original design when it was first produced in metal and augmenting the range of weights for the typeface. 8. Born 19. 6. 1880 in Martinsville, USA, died 25. 12. 1956 in Hingham, Massachusetts, USA – type designer, printer, typographer, graphic designer – studied at the Frank Holme School of Illustration in Chicago under Frederic W. Goudy.

10 Summary The Transitionals are also characterized by a more dramatic variation in stroke width –a controversial development that led to charges of impaired legibility & letters too bright to read comfortably.
