An 80 kg, 27-year old male starts exercising on a standard Monark cycle ergometer (flywheel of 6 meters/revolution). His pedaling rate is 80 revolutions per minute and the resistance on the bike is set to 2.5 kg. 1.What work rate is the subject exercising at? 2. If he exercises for 60 minutes, what is his power output? 3.If he has a maximal O 2 uptake of 75 ml/kg/min, at what % of VO 2max he is working at? 4.At this percentage of VO 2max, what muscle fibers would he predominately use? 5.What would be the predominant fuel at this %VO 2max ? 6.How many calories does he burn over 60 minutes?

You are asked to prescribe exercise for a woman participating on the Biggest Loser. She weighs 200 pounds and needs to lose 40 pounds. After initial exercise VO 2max tests you determine that her VO 2max is 20 ml/kg/min. How many hours/week would she have to exercise on a treadmill (2 mph/10% grade) to lose 2.5 lbs/week? At what relative intensity is she exercising at? After 4 months of endurance training, she can run at 7 mph at a 7.5% grade. What are some of the training adaptations that occurred over this time frame? Think cardiovascular, metabolic, respiratory, endocrine, skeletal muscle, lactate threshold, ventilatory threshold, etc…

A 35 year-old recreationally active woman comes into the exercise laboratory and begins a 5-hour ride on a stationary cycle ergometer, set at a constant work rate (approximately 55% of the subject’s previously determined VO2max). You are using indirect calorimetry, electrocardiogram, blood sampling, and blood pressure monitoring throughout the test. What happens physiologically to her over the course of the 5 hours? Beginning of the ride; late in the ride Fuel utilization Fluid intake Any ergogenic aids that would help? Endocrine changes What would be different if it was conducted in a chamber at 100°F?

You are 20 years old and conduct a VO 2max test on yourself. It is 55 ml/kg/min. 30 years later, you have a chance to have another test done. What would be your approximate VO 2max based on estimates of the decline in VO 2max over the years? What does VO 2max consist of? What would happen to your skeletal muscle fibers? What is the maximal HR at 20 years old? 55 years old? Can you do anything to keep it from going down? What do you expect would happen to the body composition over 30 years?

Know all your exercise physiology for: Cardiovascular Endocrine Skeletal muscle Respiratory Metabolism/Fuel Utilization Training effects Nutritional ergogenic aids Effects of heat Aging
