PH4010 - Senior Physics Colloquium I Fall 2008 Instructor: Max Seel Office: Rekhi 311, 487-3300, seel@mtu.eduseel@mtu.edu Tue. & Thur. 3 p.m, 138 Fisher BUT: Thursday class meets at 4 p.m, 139 Fisher on the weeks with Departmental Colloquia

Speaker’s Six Points 1.Structure: “Why, What, How” (+ Closure: summary of main points) 2. Organization: Beginning, Middle, Conclusion 3. Proper Focused Contents 4. Presentation Slides: clear to read, key results, your organization 5. Speech: necessary information, audience targeted, terms defined 6. Delivery: speaker style (energy, nervous, confidence, speed, eye contact, time limit) What should each speaker know?

This is a required course for SPH and SAP majors Meaning: if you fail, you can’t graduate! More positive: you practice and learn how to give a (scientific) presentation Structure: Why (Motivation) (Objective) The Important Beginning!

Preparation before your talk: reading scientific papers, editing, rehearsal, use visual aids, etc. Public speaking practice of the same format as at professional meetings, colloquia and seminars. Listening skills are developed, both in class, Tuesday, and at departmental colloquia, Thursday. Do I need the course? Yes, you do… because it helps you in getting physicist professional skills

1. Each student prepares and gives 2-3 short talks (10 min) and one intermediate length talk (15-20 min). 2. Each speaker should also present a short abstract before the talk. 3. References are to be included in all the presentations. Structure: What (Method) 4. Develop Listening Skills

Listening skills are developed by attending PH4010 classes and Departmental Colloquia Each student (but the current speaker) completes an evaluation form for each presentation in class 4. Listening Skills All students also evaluate invited speakers at Departmental Colloquium (another evaluation form)

2. Students research for preparing their talks using Internet and library Structure: How (Results & Discussion) 1. The style of the talks should imitate presentations at Physics Professional Meetings 3. Your talks originate from three blocks listed in Syllabus: best scientists, experiments and papers

Grading Presentations: 60% Participation: 25% Speaker’s Evaluations: 15% Final Exam Major Physics Field Test http://www.phy.mtu.edu/majorfield.html MTU Physics Dept. Percentile for Class of 2003: 99%. This means that 99% of participating physics departments had a lower average than MTU. This puts the physics majors from MTU in the top 1% of all the physics majors at participating schools. = CONCLUSION
