Monday, 4/29/02, Slide #1 MA 102 Statistical Controversies Monday, 4/29/02 Today: CLOSING CEREMONIES!  Discuss HW #3  Review for final exam  Evaluations  FINAL EXAM: Wednesday, 5/8/02, 9 -12, Harder 203 (HERE!)  OFFICE HOURS: 3 – 5 Monday & Tuesday next week and by appointment

Monday, 4/29/02, Slide #2 General Info About Final Exam  Final is cumulative: Covers material from entire course (class meetings, readings, homeworks and tests)  A bit more emphasis on material covered since second test: Expected value, general confidence intervals, significance testing.   You may bring to the exam a reference sheet: one 8.5 by 11 piece of paper, on which you may write any information you wish (both sides OK).

Monday, 4/29/02, Slide #3 Overview of the Course  Part I : Producing Data  Samples, SRS, parameters versus statistics, variability, observational studies, randomized comparative experiments, causation, lurking variables, confounding, double-blind experiments, 95% confidence intervals, margin of error, explanatory variable, response variable, sampling error, non-sampling error.

Monday, 4/29/02, Slide #4 Overview continued  Part II : Organizing Data  Graphs and charts, categorical versus quantitative variables, bar graph, pie chart, line graph, pictograms, distribution of a variable, normal distribution, skewed distribution, outlier, center, spread, histogram, stem plot, numerical descriptors: median, quartiles, 5-number summary, mean, standard deviation; box plot, 68 – 95 – 99.7 rule for normal distributions, standard scores, scatterplot, association, correlation, regression, least-squares line, index number, CPI.

Monday, 4/29/02, Slide #5 Overview continued  Part III : Chance  Probability, random phenomenon, probability model (discrete or density curve), expected value, law of large numbers.  Part IV : Inference  Sampling distributions, mean and SD of distribution of sample proportions, level C confidence intervals, significant tests, null and alternate hypotheses, P-value.
