2 Techniques to Manage Behavior  Early Intervention is Key!  Identify the Type of Behavior. Use Students in Crisis or Conflict Brochure.  Consult with Michael T.  Develop a strategy.  Verbal Directive to Student  Student/Teacher Conference  Written Documentation  How and When to Give a Directive Not to Return to Class  After a Significant Disruption  Referral to Student Conduct  Referral to Care Team

3 Verbal Directive to Student  Identify the Behavior  Define Impact  Directive that Behavior is Expected to Stop  Consequence

4 Student/Teacher Conference  Carefully Choose a Time and Place for the Meeting.  Consider Having a Third Party Present.  Review Classroom Expectations.  Seek to Understand Students’ Needs.  For instance, does the student need to leave 15 minutes early each class? If so, could the student sit at the back of the room?

5 Written Documentation  Identify the Behavior. Define Impact. Direct that Behavior is Expected to Stop. Identify Consequence.  Indicate that All Students Are Expected to Abide by These Expectations.  Example 1  Example 2

6 Directive Not to Return to Class / Summary Restriction (Interim Suspension)  When the Student is Unwilling or Unable to Stop the Disruptive Behavior:  Take the Immediate Actions You Need to Resolve the Disruption  Inform Students They Are Not to Return to Class Until They Have Met with You, You and Colleague, or a Dean of Students Office Staff Member  IMMEDIATELY Consult with the Dean of Students Office. The Dean of Students Office Will Need a Written Report and Will Consider Issuing a Summary Restriction.
