SOUND Created by: Nickey Druley

Introduction: Now that you have learned that sound is made by the vibration of an object let’s learn about the different objects that make sounds!

Before Reading: Take a picture walk through the text and predict what types of sounds will be made What do you think the word decibel means? Record your answers on the document below. M:\Predict.doc

During Reading List the sounds that the Foley studio team creates. As you read, write down the job of each Foley team member.

After Reading Write a paragraph using evidence from the text to support this statement: Each Foley studio team member’s job is important to movies.

After Reading: In your science journal: 1. Write what the word “decibel” means on page 3? 2. Give one example of how decibels can change. 3. Why do you think Brian’s job is important? 4. What do you think movies would be like without sound effects?

Beyond Reading: Make a list of 15 sounds you hear in a day. (Hint: Stop talking and listen to what’s around you!) Estimate the decibels of each sound on your list. Click here to see examples of the decibels of sounds. Interactive Sound Ruler--text-only version [NIDCD Health Information]Interactive Sound Ruler--text-only version [NIDCD Health Information] Create a table to show your sounds in order from least to greatest using the decibels.

Beyond Reading: Click on the site below to create a graph representing information on your table. http://nces.ed.gov/nceskids/Graphing/http:/ /nces.ed.gov/nceskids/Graphing/http:/ /nces.ed.gov/nceskids/Graphing/

Beyond Reading: To explore more information on sound click on the link below: http://www.sci.mus.mn.us/sound/nocss/top.html http://www.sci.mus.mn.us/sound/nocss/top.html Write a summary on your visit to the website and what you discovered while you were there then share it with your partner.

Rubric AdvanceProficientBasic Activating Prior Knowledge Predictions were clearly based on clues from illustrations. Predictions from knowledge of the subject but not from picture clues Predictions were minimally developed without clues from the text or previous lessons. Read and Respond Complete list of jobs and sounds created by Foley team. Some jobs and sounds are identified, But not all of them. Only a few sounds or jobs are listed, but missing important and obvious information. Thinking Deeply & Revisiting the Text All 4 questions are answered in complete sentences with support from the text. Paragraphs are fully developed with evidence to support statements. All questions are complete only with some evidence from the text. Paragraphs are somewhat developed with some support from the text. Incomplete answers and statements are given with no support from the text. Paragraphs are minimally developed with little or no evidence from the text. Going Beyond the Text Graphs and tables are complete with reasonable examples of sounds. Summary sparks an interest in the website. Tables and graphs have some sounds identified. Summaries give basic information on the website. Incomplete graphs and tables of sounds. Summary does not provide information about the website and its content. Completing Assigned Tasks All tasks are complete with effort and knowledge of the subject is obvious. Most tasks are complete with evidence of some effort. Tasks are incomplete without care or effort.
