Developing Appropriate Curricula for Needs of Petroleum Industry P.K. Saraswati Professor Department of Earth Sciences IIT Bombay

Organizing a new academic programme: M.Tech. (Petroleum Geoscience) at IIT Bombay DGH meetings with academia in 2005 – 2006 motivated us to start the course. Discussed syllabus with industry and received important feedback from BG, DGH and Schlumberger. Contacted BG, Schlumberger and Reliance for funding the programme. BG came forward with a major support and signed MOU on 7 th November 2006. Started the course in July 2007. Requested DGH for seismic and well-log data. BG released data from Tapti for teaching and project work. Schlumberger provided license for GeoFrame. ONGC agrees for 4-week exposure for R&D work and data and guidance for 1-year Project Work to all students.

Where do we need industry cooperation? Faculty development Virtually non-existent specializations: Seismic, Petrophysics, Well-logging, Organic geochemistry Visiting Faculty – Not a solution but compliments regular teaching. “Chair position” at entry level (Lecturer / Asstt. Professor) to promote specializations where getting faculty is difficult. Exchange of professionals and faculty between industry and academia should be initiated.
6
Where do we need industry cooperation? Laboratory development Industry should fund new laboratories in academic departments for teaching and training. Provision of Data Subsurface samples; seismic; well-logs

Way Forward Make interaction with long term vision. A fire-fighting approach will not work. Supporting a few identified departments and each with certain specializations will be a better strategy than minor supports to a number of departments. Equal emphasis on research will be key to growth of petroleum geoscience teaching in academic departments. Be open to publications of research findings, subject to minimum confidentiality restrictions.
