1 Mashups “From past to present”

2 The Beginning What started it all: Mashups began with three brooklyn dj’s that accidentally mixed two songs on their turntables. This then turned into something these dj’s started playing. Though this song had weak popularity. (I could not find the songs or the dj’s that made this track). What originally started mashups: John oswald s mixing of led zepp songs This led to his album Plunderphonics which was eventually banned in 1994 due to copyright issues from record businesses he nicknamed this forming genre “bastard pop” This prominitluy began the genre but it wasn’t until around 2003 when artists like girl talk began to make mash ups oswald mixed some songs by michael jackson public enemy and many other prominent artists of the 1990’s plunder phonics “john oswald” mashups started out with beat matching of songs and it ultimately started out with accidental mixing by Djs through their turntables. These types of “mixes” started off in 1970 but it wasn’t until 1988 when plunder phonics was released that this genre started to expand immaculately.

After a few collaborative efforts he started the solo "Girl Talk" project and continued making music under the Girl Talk alias while studying biomedical engineering at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. He produces mashup-style remixes, in which he uses often a dozen or more unauthorized samples from different songs to create a new song. The New York Times Magazine has called his music "a lawsuit waiting to happen," [4] a criticism that Gillis has attributed to mainstream media that want "to create controversy where it doesn't really exist," citing fair use as a legal backbone for his sampling practices. [7] Most recently, he attributed the name to a grunge band called TAD, based in Seattle. 5 Milkman Gregg Luskin Is a prominent mashup artist who has preformed shows all over the country and is considered one of the top new Dj’s in the game. Instrument turntables laptop Early Years Milkman is the stage alias of Hip-Hop/Dance/Rock music producer Gregg Luskin from San Diego, CA. As a freshman at the University of California, Santa Barbara, Milkman was introduced to various glitch-pop remix artists. After being exposed to this new and upcoming sample-based genre, Milkman spent the remainder of the year learning and improving his own mashup technique. It took Milkman 13 months to complete his debut album Lactose and THC (released January 22, 2008 under self owned production company Milkman Entertainment) and was available to download for free online. Over the course of the next year, the debut album Lactose and THC was downloaded over 26,000 from his website alone and was voted the "#2 Mashup Album of All Time" by DJ Forum. Soon after, Milkman took his music to a more professional level by offering live DJ service- extending the sound of his debut album for a more dance-oriented environment. In the years following, Milkman expanded his fan base by performing locally in the shore-side college community Isla Vista. As word spread through college campuses around the country and over seas, Milkman's popularity began to grow and was soon headlining performances from coast to coast. Milkman is now regarded as a premiere mashup DJ around the world and regularly performs with A-List artists such as Kid Cudi, Lil' Jon and Three 6 Mafia. Milkman was awarded both "Hottest mashup DJ of 2008" as well as "DJ to watch out for in 2009" by DJ Forum. Prior to digital music production and live DJ performance, Gregg Luskin was the lead guitarist of San Diego based rock quartet A Dead Giveaway under the indie-rock label Pacific Records. 6 john oswald John Oswald (born May 30, 1953 in Kitchener, Ontario) is a Canadian composer, saxophonist, media artist and dancer. His best known project is Plunder phonics, the practice of making new music out of previously existing recordings (see sound collage and musical montage).Kitchener, OntarioCanadiancomposerPlunder phonics sound collagemusical montage Oswald coined the term "plunder phonics" to describe his craft in a paper called "Plunder-phonics, or Audio Piracy as a Compositional Prerogative" which he presented at the Wired Society Electro-Acoustic Conference in Toronto in 1985. Inspired by William S. Burroughs' cut-up technique, Oswald had been devising plunder phonic-style compositions since the late '60s. In an interview with Norman Igma following the release of the Plunder phonics EP in 1988, he described the concept as follows:plunder phonics"Plunder-phonics, or Audio Piracy as a Compositional Prerogative"William S. Burroughs His 1975 track "Power" married frenetic Led Zeppelin guitars to the impassioned exhortations of a Southern US evangelist years before hip hop discovered the potency of the same (and related) ingredients. Similarly, his 1990 track "Vane", which pitted two different versions of the song "You're So Vain" (the Carly Simon original and a cover by Faster Pussycat) against each other, was a blueprint for the contemporary pop sub genre, 'glitch pop' or 'mashup (music)'.Led ZeppelinUShip hopYou're So VainCarly SimonFaster Pussycatmashup (music) ■Burrows (1974–75) ■Power (1975) ■Improvised (1978) ■Moose and Salmon (Music Gallery, 1979) ■Alto Sax (Metalanguage, 1981) ■Plunder phonics EP (1988) ■Plunder phonic CD (1989) ■Electrax (1991) ■Discophere (1991) ■Rubiyat Plunderphonics (1991) - promo-CD made from Elektra Records' Rubáiyát: Elektra's 40th Anniversary collectionElektra RecordsRubáiyát: Elektra's 40th Anniversary ■Acoustics (1993) - with Henry Kaiser, Jim O'Rourke, and Mari KimuraHenry KaiserJim O'RourkeMari Kimura ■Plexure (1993) ■Grayfolded (1994) - a two cd mix of over 100 versions of the Grateful Dead song "Dark Star" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Oswald_(composer)GrayfoldedGrateful DeadDark Star http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Oswald_(composer ■Parcours scénographique (1997) ■aCCoMpliCes with CCMC (Victo, VICTO 063, 1998)CCMCVicto ■69plunderphonics96 (a.k.a. 7 How to Make your own mashup Here are some tips on how to make your own mashup using the Apple software, Logic 09. From my own personal experience finding accapellas and instrumentals works far better for this software. Though if you are interested in ripping the vocals you can use an EQ or sound gating high or low sounds depending on what your trying to get out of the song. First find an acapella of your choice. Then find a instrumental and load both into logic. Then i suggest beat-matching so the two songs fit. If not you can use the tempo controls or the flex tools which help with the beat and tempo match process. I also suggest using volume automations for fading in and out of songs. Then I suggest using the crossfade tool to help transitions into your next set of songs. From her you want to repeat these steps with different song combos of your own. One thing that really makes it interesting is when you take two really different genre’s and blend them together to make a very unique song.
