Induction Motor Action
Look at the magnetic fields established by the three phases
Look at the zero degree condition The “net” magnetic field is pointing down
Look at the 60 degree condition The “net” magnetic field has moved by 60
Look at the 120 degree condition The “net” magnetic field has moved another 60 the “net” field is “rotating” counter-clockwise
Effects of the rotating magnetic field on the rotor Magnetic field rotates at “synchronous” speed, and “cuts” the rotor bars
Induced rotor current and flux Flux around the rotor bar must be “clockwise” Bunching occurs at the right side of the bar Rotor moves Counter-Clockwise (CCW)

Electrical machine1 J 2006 Three phase Induction Motor.
Rotating Magnetic Field
Interaction of Magnetic Fields (Motor Action)
Brushless DC (BLDC) Motors Brushless DC Motors are a type of synchronous motor –magnetic fields generated by the stator and rotor rotate at the same frequency.
Motors Physics 102 Professor Lee Carkner Lecture 20.
ECE 4411 Quadrature-Field Theory and Induction-Motor Action Single-phase induction motor cannot develop a rotating magnetic field Needs an “auxiliary”
Synchronous Motors and Generators
Three-Phase Induction Motor Stator. Three-Phase Alternating Current.
Reluctance Motors An induction motor with a modified squirrel-cage rotor Single-phase or Three-phase rotor turns in synchronism with the rotating magnetic.
ECE 4411 Equivalent Circuit of an Induction Motor Rotor Consider just a single phase. The power and torque developed by the motor will be three times that.
SEE 3433 MESIN ELEKTRIK SYNCHRONOUS MACHINES Basic principles.
ECE 4411 Induction Generators Same basic construction as squirrel-cage induction motors Drive at a speed greater than the synchronous speed Not started.
Induction Motor Construction
ECE 4411 Introduction to DC Machines Advantages –Adjustable speed –Develop rated torque at all speeds –Higher torque than an equivalent AC machine Uses.
Universal Motor ECE 441.
Positive charged particles headed toward the earth from space, would tend (at mid-latitudes) to reach the surface coming down from the 1. North 2. South.
Hysteresis Motors Stator Rotor same as for induction motor
