18 June 2004AFC meeting1 MICE  functions and so on Work in progress…. Observation by Ulisse Bravar at CERN meeting that beam not matched in baseline (Proposal 1a) MICE channel Investigate other ‘solutions’ to magnetic optics –Bob Palmer’s solutions as given in MICE note 49 –Latest ‘post Genoa’ Mike Green solutions Reported at MICE VC 2 nd June

18 June 2004AFC meeting2 What is a  function ? Property of magnetic field of channel rms beam size related to  function and emittance  : Need  beam  radius of channel to keep losses small For 1% loss require  beam  radius of channel / 3 Example:  n      cm, r = 20 cm (say) require  140 cm  grows in field-free region (drift)        

18 June 2004AFC meeting3 Bob Palmer 9/2003 Current Optics  larger -- presumably due to increased spacing solenoid – focus coils and smaller B Smaller momentum acceptance Different here BzBz 

18 June 2004AFC meeting4 Beam sizes (3 x rms) for  n  cm, 200 MeV/c Cavities still limiting aperture Beam sizes – on momentum

18 June 2004AFC meeting5 Beam sizes (3 x rms) for  cm, 220 MeV/c, 200 MeV/c tune 3  clipping downstream of last absorber Beam sizes – 10% off momentum Absorber

18 June 2004AFC meeting6 To-do list Quantify / understand effect on emittance measurement & losses –Needs ICOOL studies –Is it a real problem? Personal uninformed opinion – it looks ugly U.B. currently at BNL talking to R. Palmer Look at other settings and Stages IV and V: –SFOFO –Semi-flip –Non-flip See how much space can be reclaimed from gate-valve etc. –Need to find new matched solutions & iterate Work in progress....much to do
