Project Background: Electro-Spark Deposition

Ultrasonic Impact Treatment Ultrasonic Impact Treatment

Primary customer needs for this project:  Automate the use of the existing UIT gun  Perform UIT on a minimum 2 inch square flat surface  Provide oxidation/debris removal during UIT operation  Solution should be cost effective  Automation to be more consistent, accurate and safer than when done by hand

Main Design Targets:  Automate existing handheld UIT application  Ability to treat minimum 2 inch square flat specimen area  Ability to provide an impact force to the work surface that is adjustable from 0 – 15 lbs  Adjustable feed rate in the X and Y directions  Ability to treat specimens of different thicknesses  Ability to treat various specimen shapes  Total cost less than $1000  Combined weight less than 1500 lbs

Alternative Solutions: Possible automation solutions:  Robotic Arm  Modular Servo Racks

Design Solution: XY Table  Pneumatically actuated UIT gun  XY Table positions specimen  Fully adjustable mounting capabilities  Integrated with ESD coating process  Gas shielding apparatus  Adaptable for future optimization
