2. Objectives The student will be able to:
Identify and differentiate between the different parts of a story and where they belong on a plot diagram.
Arrange a generic plot diagram so that it represents a given story,
Prepare a plot diagram for a story he/she has read recently.

3. What is Plot? Plot – noun: the main storyline of a literary work.
Narrative Order: the sequence of events
Chronological
Flashback
Time Lapse
Who has heard of plot before?
What other things might you talk about when considering plot?
- setting, characters, figurative language…

4. The Plot Diagram Climax Rising Action Falling Action Conflict
Exposition: information the author gives you at the beginning of the story. Setting (ie. Time, date, mood, place)
Rising Action: A plot usually begins with a problem which the protagonist must meet or solve. During the story, tension is built through a series of complications, incidents which either help or hinder the protagonist in finding a solution.
Conflict: the struggle between the protagonist and an opposing force
Climax: the peak or turning point of the action; at this point we know the outcome
Falling Action: provides any necessary explanation
Resolution: at the end of the story, the sense that it is complete.
