2 Note taking  Integral part of the interview process.  We need notes to refresh our memory, to remind us to carry out our part of an agreed plan of action, to discuss the interview with professional colleagues.

3 Recording and Recalling the Interview Many Different Approaches  In our culture, when note taking is discriminately handled, it is not resented. Some Don’ts  Don’t turn note taking into cross examination.  Don’t let note taking interfere with the flow of the interview.

4 Recording and Recalling the Interview Some Don’ts (cont.)  Don’t hide behind or escape into note taking.  Don’t be secretive about the taking of notes, lest this arouse anxiety or curiosity of the client.  When taking notes in the presence of the client, don’t write things you are not prepared to have them see.

5 Recording and Recalling the Interview The Ethics of Note Taking  Confidentiality Honesty Essential  After trust has been established, the client may no longer require us to keep information confidential, but will rely upon our professional judgment.

6 Recording and Recalling the Interview Tape Recording  The primary use of the taped interview is learning or research.  Very few clients usually choose to listen to an audio tape of a session.

7 Recording and Recalling the Interview Video Tape  Videotaping for teaching-learning purposes is an ideal tool.  We can observe ourselves in action and can really and truly learn by seeing.

8 Recording and Recalling the Interview Supervision  Benjamin does not favor live supervision.  Benjamin supports the idea of audio tapes for supervision.  Peer supervision vs. peer consultation.  Individual supervision vs. group supervision.
