Homework quiz Simplify Completely: 1. 2. 3.

Test Friday 3/2 Simplifying expressions –Exponent properties (4.1, 4.2) Know how to apply the specific properties (when to add powers, when to multiply powers, etc…) Know how to handle negative exponents –Addition and subtraction of polynomials (4.4, 4.7) –Multiplication of polynomials (4.5, 4.7)

Solve when finished with quiz Suppose a student has scores of 74, 78, and 70 on three exams. What score is necessary on a fourth exam for the student to earn an average grade of 80?

Equation: A statement that says the expressions on either side of the symbol, =, are the same. Solution to an Equation: a substitution for a variable that makes the equation true.

Addition Principle of Equations: For any real numbers a and b, if a = b, then a + c = b + c (or a – c = b – c). Multiplication Principle of Equations: For any real numbers a and b, if a = b, then a · c = b · c (or a/c = b/c). ALWAYS USE THE ADDITIVE PROPERTY BEFORE THE MULTIPLICATIVE PROPERTY.

Steps to Solving Linear Equations (first degree equations) Collect all terms with variables on one side of the equation, and all numbers (constant terms) on the other side using the additive property.. Multiply or divide to isolate the variable using the multiplication property. Simplify each side of the equation using order of operations (PEMDAS). Check all possible solutions in the original equation.

Homework Read Sections 2.1 – 2.2 Page 142: 10, 23, 25, 27, 37, 40 Page 148: 7, 11, 15, 17, 19, 27, 28 Study Suggestion Treat every homework question as a test question. Don’t rely on the answers in the back of the book. One difficulty of tests is that the answers are not given. Practice for what you will be asked on the tests.
