COMP106 PROPOSAL 24

Design Interface of Library Catalogue using Direct Interface Three main tasks Users perform on the interface are as follows : Searching and locating Books including restricting the search criteria Viewing Library record and renewing books Getting Library Information

Searching for Books  Users can Limit their search using the 5 main categories. The search can also be limited to specific resources  The user just has to click on one of the pictures to proceed to the search screen of that criteria.  Once the user has entered the Search Criteria the results are displayed on screen.  The response from the search criteria is automated and displayed in a list. A print button will allow users to print results. However this should be disabled in location where there are not available printers.  A link is installed on each search result which will take the user to map pointing out the location of the Users search request.  There is however a quick search drop down box on the main home page.  Search Screen Search Screen

Viewing Library record and renewing books To view the User’s Library record and renew books, they click on the relevant icon. This will automatically take them through to a password entry screen where, from which to their library record. Here Users will be able to view their requests, change pin, view outstanding and loaned books and change address details. Using the interface I have designed the user will automatically be able to go to other screen but clicking on the Book tag for the home page or others if needed. And once logged in this page will remain active to be viewed again without having to enter password details again.

Getting Library Information  For the users to Access Library information they click on the Icon which will automatically display the Library information pages.  The metaphor of an open book (See Here) allows users to go back to previous screens at ease using the book marks (Detailed here).See HereDetailed here  The display of the information will be in the same style and links from this page will be displayed in the same context.

Basic Metaphor For interface

Book Metaphor Book Metaphor The metaphor I have used is that of an open Book. The open book is the same throughout the website allowing for continuity The open book has Bookmarks with Icons to allow advanced users who know the icons to access pages directly. This will also allow users to swap between pages at will without using back buttons on the browser. People using the library have an understanding of books or can easily find one. This allows people to understand the metaphor immediately. Back

Back Library Information BackBack Searching for books Search Screen BackBack Interface Design

Interface Design The Book Tag that the user is currently on is also highlighted in a different colour thus enabling locus of control at all times. At all times the interface remains the same visually thus ensuring consistency. The user still enters the search criteria as before but additions of map buttons to locate books and Print Buttons to print out results of search There is also an addition of a Map Button to locate search result in library (See Link)See Link
