3 Terminology Capture Device: A device that is used to convert analogue video into digital video. Encoder & Decoder: Software that is used to compress and decompress digital video. Compression makes the file size smaller. Editing: The process of rearranging, adding and/or removing sections of video clips. Also, creating transitions between clips. Editing is part of post- production. Encoding: The process of converting digital video into a particular format, for example, saving a video project in MGEG-2 format for DVD distribution. Layering: Adding multiple layers of video. Linear Editing: Also known as tape to tape editing. A method of editing in which footage is copied from one tape to another in the required order Non Linear Editing: An editing method which uses computer software to edit the footage. Transition: The way one shot changes to the next Post Production: Everything that happens to the video and audio after production, i.e. after the footage has been shot. Post production includes video editing, audio editing, titling, color correction, effects, etc.

4 Goals of editing Remove unwanted material Highlight best materials Create a flow (from begin to end) Add effects, graphics, commentary, music Make it interactive by adding different choose points (usually requires multiple applications)

5 Compression Lossless compression –Not commonly used in video editing –Like a zip package Lossy compression –DivX –Xvid –WMV9 –Much more available Comparison Uncompressed 10-bit~26.7 MB / s Uncompressed 8-bit~20.2 MB / s 720P HDTV~2.5MB / s Xvid~0.05 – 0.2 MB/s Keep in mind that viewers has to have the same codec that you are using, to be able to view the video!

9 Why this Macromedia / Adobe products are not available Movie Maker  bundled with Windows –Basic features are easy to done with this Transitions Adding music/sound Adding headers, credits BUT actual video editing capabilities are very limited  So it’s best to use this to finalize your video But you can use what ever editing software you wish For Linux there is lots of free video editing tools

10 Movie Maker supports Video –asf, avi, m1v, mp2, mp2v, mpe, mpeg, mpg, mpv2, wm, wmv –but certain avi codec may cause problems Picture –bmp, dib, emf, gif, jfif, jpe, jpeg, jpg, png, tif, tiff, wmf –Also supports animated gifs Audio –aif, aifc, au, mp2, mp3, mpa, snd, wav, wma –Bitrate and sample rate may cause problems
