Bearings By: Gary Zigmann Date: 3/6/2007

What are Bearings? Designed to permit smooth motion between two parts. They make every day machines possible; without them we would constantly be replacing parts worn out from friction. Classified by: direction of load size of load Inner race Rolling element Outer race

Classifications Radial Ball BearingRoller Bearing Ball bearings are suited best for high rpm’s due to low contact area between ball bearings and races. Roller bearings are better suited for high loads and slower speeds.

Classifications (continued) Axial/thrust Ball Bearing Roller Bearing Thrust bearings can support high axial loads. Generally loads supported by thrust bearings are gravitational.

Classifications (continued) Tapered Roller Bearings This type of bearing can support both high radial and axial loads.

Roller Bearing Selection 3 types Open Shielded Sealed $5.96 $6.73 $7.98

Some Advantages of Each Open bearings are easy to lubricate Shielded bearings are will keep out dirt and other solid debris without effecting bearing performance. Sealed bearings will keep out debris, preserve lubricants and reduce noise.

Load and size requirements

Where can you buy bearings? McMaster Carr www.mcmaster.com Dynaroll www.dynaroll.com VXB Ball Bearings www.vxb.com
