UrbanBuzz is a knowledge exchange programme to improve processes that contribute to the building of sustainable communities 28 funded projects: £2.7m funding + £2.8m CIK Programme Board (13 members) Independent evaluators: Oxford Institute for Sustainable Development UrbanBuzz Evidencing Adaptable Sustainability (EASY)

The Bartlett Partners for project EASY UrbanBuzz

Evidencing Adaptable Sustainability Project EASY Rationale:  Sustainable communities are perceived as those which are able to adapt to changing dynamics of their composition.  A key consideration has to be the quality of services and opportunities afforded by the social infrastructure in the face of change.  Boroughs are currently experiencing high population churn, uncertainty in their demographic composition.  There needs to be robust mechanisms for compiling and updating the evidence base on population change on which policy and planning changes must necessarily be founded. Project leader: Professor Allan Brimicombe Centre for Geo-Information Studies UEL a.j.brimicombe@uel.ac.uk

Evidencing Adaptable Sustainability Project EASY Broad aims: to use administrative and other data sets to evidence demographic, social and cultural change by small area geography; to develop micro-simulation models for demographic projections by small area geography; to promote the use of the evidence base and the demographic projections in support of social infrastructure planning; to deliver knowledge transfer through capacity building and skills enhancement to make these sustainable activities, so that Local Authorities can continue to monitor and adapt to change.

The study area Project EASY London Thames Gateway Lower Super Output Areas (LSOA)

Today’s programme Project EASY Population Change in the London Thames Gateway: a new approach to updating local population figures Approaches to estimating population Data sources and evaluation In-depth understanding of the new approach --------------- Coffee Break --------------- Using the approach for population estimation in the London Thames Gateway Participant response and discussion Next stage work Applications using the models
