The cartoon is showing the world market is dominated by American products. This is implied by the plaque cards that are held up since they have the American brands like Nike, Disneyland, MacDonald’s. (Inference 1)

Cartoon also shows that the world can be auctioned for money. This is implied by the bidding process with the bidder calling for bidders to state their price. (Inference 2)

The cartoon’s purpose is to show the exploitation of the world by the TNCs, that they are more concerned with making profits than being concerned with the world. This is indicated by the bidding whereby, even at one trillion there are takers. The intention is to highlight the disadvantages of globalisation and oppose the spread of American-based TNCs. (Purpose)

. Source B states that goods are now identical and can be found all over the world – “Coca-Cola in rural Vietnam, … and Nike shoes in Nigeria”. This shows us that the world has ‘shrunk’ and we can get products from all over the world even for people in rural community – they are able to experience increasing standards of living as they are able to get various product or produce. From the background information, we are know that the “world is becoming a smaller place. Goods, which were once confined to western countries, are available across the globe” – this show the integration of the world’s economy. Also from Source C, it states that globalisation has brought about global prosperity.

This source is not reliable to show that globalisation is good. It is contradicted by Sources A and D. In source A it shows that the American companies are dominating the world and exploiting them as well. In source C, it states that globalisation brings about poverty and exploitation of children for child labour.

This source is unreliable to show that globalisation is good for the world. Though it is an economic report, it is unclear of the origin of the source, so its purpose may to be persuade its government or the people of the advantages of globalisation so as to justify their economic approach. Moreover, it does not indicate the disadvantages of globalisation like the different sources. And from what I have learnt, globalisation does bring disadvantages to a country if it is not met with the correct measures.

e.g. Source E is useful as the poster shows two boys made to work – their ‘school bags’ are actually work tools of the trade. They cannot or is deprived from going to school despite their young age – this shows that the global market exploits innocent and cheap child labour as work force. (L4-4)

Source E is not useful because it is unclear if this exploitation takes place in all globalised countries. This is because in Source C it states that with globalisation, there is economic growth leading to ‘a higher standard of living for those in developing countries’ implying that there are no cases of child labour because that is one criteria for judging a country’s standard of living. (L4 – 5)

This source, though has limitations, is useful to show that children are being exploited in some countries as a result of globalisation. This is because the advertisement is by ‘World Federation of Trade Unions’ whose purpose in this case is to highlight to the general public that child labour has been used in some countries and so is garnering support to protest against these and globalisation. (L5 -6) This can be verified by source D and from my general knowledge that child labour does exist in a country that is undergoing globalisation. (L5 – 7)

The sources are different in their content. In source B, it paints a glowing picture of globalisation while in Source D, it states that globalisation has negative effects.

Source B claims that globalisation benefits countries in terms of ‘economic prosperity’ where it creates employment and ‘lowers prices’ thus resulting in a higher standard of living. Source C, on the other hand, states that globalisation brings about economic difficulties for farmers and labour exploitation. The source states that the consequence of subsidies for developed countries’ farmers would make their produce cheaper than the poorer countries thus making produce more attractive. In addition, it states that poorer countries face labour exploitation because they are ‘cheap labour’.

The two sources, however, agree that globalisation has its good effects. Source C reveals mostly about the good effects of globalisation where it states that it leads to ‘lower prices’, ‘higher standard of living’. In Source D, in the beginning, it admits to the good effects when it states ‘globalisation encourages free trade among countries’.

The purpose for both sources differ. Source C is from the World Bank and its purpose is to paint a positive picture of globalisation to the world so that more countries will see the benefits of globalisation and open their economies. Source D, on the other hand, paints a negative picture of globalisation. Being a journal on spread of poverty, its purpose is to inform its readers of how globalisation results in poverty so that countries are aware of the problems and take measures to overcome them.
