TJR Sept 22, 2004MICE Beamline Analysis -- SEPT041 MICE Beamline Analysis – SEPT04 Tom Roberts Muons, Inc. September 22, 2004

TJR Sept 22, 2004MICE Beamline Analysis -- SEPT042 Outline Summary of the SEPT04 beamline design Summary of this simulation Summary of rates Upstream PID distributions Downstream PID disributions Summary of PID Counter Losses

TJR Sept 22, 2004MICE Beamline Analysis -- SEPT043 Summary of the SEPT04 Beamline Design π + central momentum (B1)390 MeV/c μ + central momentum (B2)220 MeV/c μ + mean momentum in Tracker1 – design 206 MeV/c μ + mean momentum in Tracker1 – achieved 183 MeV/c* Diffuser thickness (Pb)0.76 cm Design input emittance6 π mm-rad * The intent of the design is for 206 MeV/c in Tracker1, but various energy losses were not accounted for in the design; this is the actual value achieved.

TJR Sept 22, 2004MICE Beamline Analysis -- SEPT044 Summary of this Simulation A significant improvement in realism: –First guess of the beamline vacuum, windows, air gaps, etc. –More detailed implementation of Tracker1 and Tracker2 Vacuum with windows 5 planes, 1.5 mm scintillator each, located as in the TRD (Sept 04) –TRD (Sept 04) configurations for everything except a few minor things (absorber and RF window shapes, RF Cavity size, Cherenkov2 modeled as a circle)

TJR Sept 22, 2004MICE Beamline Analysis -- SEPT046 TOF0 Distributions (Every blue dot lies right on top of a red dot.)

TJR Sept 22, 2004MICE Beamline Analysis -- SEPT047 Cherenkov1 Distributions (Every blue dot lies right on top of a red dot.)

TJR Sept 22, 2004MICE Beamline Analysis -- SEPT048 TOF1 Distributions (Every blue dot lies right on top of a red dot.)

TJR Sept 22, 2004MICE Beamline Analysis -- SEPT049 Downstream PID Distributions Same simulation, except: –The downstream IronShield is physically removed –Its effect on the magnetic field remains –TOFX is added to the trigger; it is 1.5 by 1.5 meters, 1 mm thick, made of Air, located 1mm ahead of where the downstream IronShield would have been. –TOF2 is extended to be 1.5 by 1.5 meters –Cherenkov2 is extended to be 1.5 meters in diameter –Calorimeter is extended to be 2.0 by 2.0 meters –Relaxed Trigger: Good mu+ requires only 14 hits out of 18 counters (i.e. nothing after TOFX is required, no cut on particle type)

TJR Sept 22, 2004MICE Beamline Analysis -- SEPT0410 TOFX Distributions – 1 (Every blue dot lies right on top of a red dot.)

TJR Sept 22, 2004MICE Beamline Analysis -- SEPT0411 TOFX Distributions – 2

TJR Sept 22, 2004MICE Beamline Analysis -- SEPT0412 TOF2 Distributions (Every blue dot lies right on top of a red dot.)

TJR Sept 22, 2004MICE Beamline Analysis -- SEPT0413 Cherenkov2 Distributions (Every blue dot lies right on top of a red dot.)

TJR Sept 22, 2004MICE Beamline Analysis -- SEPT0414 Calorimeter Distributions (Every blue dot lies right on top of a red dot.)

(Losses were determined by histogramming X and Y or R for each counter and counting tracks that exceed the TRD size.) (Remember the relaxed Trigger considers mu->e decays to be “Good mu+”.)
