Nuclear data: fission yields, decay heat and neutron reaction cross sections: A Proposal for a Nuclear Data Consortium Universities of Manchester, Surrey & York

nTOF TAS STEFF 3 Strands

ENDF (USA) BROND (Former USSR) JENDL (Japan) JEFF (Europe) WPEC (NEA OECD) UK Nuclear Industry Private Companies: Serco, Studsvik of America, CEA, etc. Academic Nuclear Data mostly for physics Industrial Nuclear Data Codes. Reactors. Databases. Safety. Nuclear Data: Collection, Dissemination and Usage

nTOF: Class A International Facility

nTOF Recruit Research Fellow (C-NET) Formally join nTOF. Contribute to equipment, target material, join in running experiment shifts and analysis work. Network York, (NNL support for Manchester activities) Support data evaluation effort, dissemination. Interests: initially with neutron capture cross section measurements relevant to current and new generation reactors as identified in NEA High Priority Request List ( 238 U, 241 Am, 243 Am) New proposal to the INTC PAC in Nov 2010: Fission of 240/242 Pu, 245 Cm, 232/234 Th, 238 U, Ratio( 238 U/ 235 U ). Later through consultation.

Fission fragment spectrometer “STEFF” (running off-line at Manchester with 252 Cf – later moves to GANIL - NFS)

Anode signal After digital filtering Noise < 0.2% ~£250 k already invested Current Mass resolution ~4% Upgrade: increase T by factor 3 Novel Digital Pulse-shape analysis Low-noise energy measurements Z sensitivity ~ 1/40

STEFF Upgrade and NFS Programme Increase FF flight path to 3m Maintain solid angle Obtain mass resolution ~ 1% After discussions with NNL, suggest: 238 U, 239 Pu and 237 Np, E n =1-20 MeV.

Lucrecia, Total Absorption Gamma Spectrometer at CERN / Jyvaskyla A large NaI cylindrical crystal 38 cm Ø, 38cm length An X-ray detector (Ge) A  detector Collection point inside the crystal TAGS response for 22 Na source and Monte Carlo

Proposed: 89,90 Kr, 96 Y, 99,100 Zr, 98,99,102 Nb, 103 Mo, 103 Tc, 132 Sb, 135 Te, 136,136m I, 139,140 Xe, and 143 La. (WPEC Priority-1 Nuclei) TAS Programme Significant discrepancies (i.e. factors of 2-3 in some cases) between JEFF and TAGS

J. Billowes + NDA Student Manchester R.F. (C-NET) R. Mills (V.F, NNL) A.G. Smith nTOF Collaboration P. Regan Z. Podolyak Student W. Gelletly A. Nichols D. Jenkins Student TAS Manchester Surrey York nTOF JEFF etc. TAS Collaboration STEFF NFS UKNSF: Nichols (Chair), Mills, Billowes, Regan.

Project Workplan

Required Resources 2 studentships Staff effort nTOF subscription STEFF upgrade capital Travel and subsistence Cost to EPSRC: £533 k Deliverables Fission yield measurements Upgraded STEFF TAS results: nTOF results: at least 2 trained students in nuclear data Contribution to databases Benefits Better links between academia and nuclear data community Better links between academics interested in applied physics Reengagement of UK with international nuclear data effort Increased UK international profile Improved applied infrastructure Support and enhancement of UK nuclear physics expertise
