One-Dimensional Conduction Analysis of Thermal Barrier Coated Turbine Vanes Walter VanCleave

Problem Definition Heat transfer scheme of a turbine vane –Cooling air passes through internal passages to extract heat from the base metal by convection. –On the outer surface of the vane hot air from the combustor of the engine passes over the thermal coated surface and heat is absorbed by the vane. The total of these components of heat transfer must not raise the metal temperature above its maximum operating temperature.

Graphical Representation

Mathematical Model Heat Equation for a slab: xi 0 Surface Boundary Conditions: x = x1 t > 0 x = xM+1 t > 0 Interface Boundary Conditions: x = xi+1 i = 1, 2,…, M-1 t > 0

Mathematical Solution Solution is based on method of Superposition xi 0 Solving steady-state parts for  and  Solving time-dependent homogeneous part  –Seperation of variables i = 1,2,…,M –Temperature distribution xi < x < xi+1 i = 1,2,…,M
