AESOP AESOP The Academic Educational Support Object Program Perhaps it should be a National Object Based Learning Environment project or a NOBLE project! N L I 11/1/95

AESOP Changing Environment  The sign of an educated man was how much knowledge he possessed

AESOP Now...  The sign of an educated person is how he or she can find out what they need to know and  to evaluate it and  to use it

AESOP Do you find...  It is often easier to find something 1,000’s of miles away than 50 feet down the hall?  When you get it, it is in the wrong format?  When you press a navigation button it really isn’t?  You probably could make it work but you can’t alter it to fit your situation?

AESOP Current Situation in Instructional Support Programs  Many great programs throughout the country  Excellent software being produced  Teaching Centered  Learning Centered  Course Ware  Support  Remediation  BUT....

AESOP Problems  Most are developed in a unique environment, for use in a unique environment  Those that are designed for a broad audience are often single stand alone applications  Many are discipline specific and are tough to generalize  Many can’t easily fit a professors intent

AESOP One vision  Develop an environment that plugs and plays interactive objects that have instructional support for:  Class administration,  Class presentation,  Class assessment,  Class feed back and  Cut across all disciplines.

AESOP Could be...  A set of common definitions for that which we do,  A set of standards to which we develop,  A series of programs taken on by various institutions to fill in the gaps,  A setting of a common input and output architecture,  Testing of current applications in other environments with support for adapting it here or there.

AESOP A deeper vision for instructional administration  Moving Icons  Add names from class list to grade book  Add grades from grade book to grade sheet  Just drag and drop. 13 AESOP Going even deeper  A set of objects that interoperate  All Grade books interchangeable  Quantitative and qualitative  Selecting the outputs and inputs  Comments in grade book to feedback note to student to final grade “letter”

AESOP What would it take?  Standards  Elements to be included  Applications to be included  Adaptation or generation of applications

AESOP Course Tool Objects  Management  Learning  Communication  Developer Created Objects  Object Security  Support for using objects  Standards

AESOP Management  Automated grade book with student faces  Automated ordering and trouble shooting system over all the campus that even a faculty member can use  Automated grade sheets with electronic signatures  More instruction collaboration and dynamic building of groups and software, projects, resources for projects from every source  Whatever --- interfaces with administrative systems  Syllabus to the bookstore  Facilitate administration for faculty

AESOP  Homework submission-grading-quiz, management, security  Tools that track and send errors and use to developer and instructors  Automatically generated E-mail (grouped and dynamic)  Common test tools  Updated learning communities, list serves, etc.  Interfacing reserve with library and bookstore  Gathering use stats (hits on field)  Tools for recording, indexing, keeping track of assignments

AESOP Learning  Interaction of multimedia-text, images and data bases easily  Instructors tool kit for presentation (content drives presentation)  Basic tools, notebooks, etc.  Tools for scaffolding learning ( reflection, connection, abstraction etc. )  Glossary builder with intelligent levels  Sharing documents and editing

AESOP Communication  Any application can access information off of the Internet  Standards to send e-mail from program to instructor  Link dynamic info in the net to a program, etc.  Apprenticeship- common way to design and manage those relationships, student work by and with them  Virtual group discussion with FAQ and Chat

AESOP Developer Created Objects  Professors assistant forums- construct courses where pieces in graphics - collect info easily and use (FORTE)  Instructors tool kit for presentation (content drives presentation)  Management tool for collaboration  Basic tools, notebooks, etc.  Increase customize of prepared software  Anybody draw and convert to simulations and models  Tools that track and send errors and use to developer and instructors  tools for easy form generation -faculty and students  Tools for recording, indexing, keeping track of assignments

AESOP Object Security  Security issues-software

AESOP Support for using objects

AESOP Standards  Involvement/collaboration in defining and developing standards – Involvement of faculty and collaboration with all of these tools  Object standards – Common format for syllabi – Standard nomenclature for instructional situations, searching, indexing etc.. – Common set of buttons and actions and what they are called – Distribution of images – Tools for navigation framework, personalized by student or faculty members – Copyright solution
