2 The Political System Dictator Leader Porfirio Diaz –His federal constitution of 1857 had guarantee of Mexican rights but were constantly being violated. For example election govt were set up Freedom of press did not exist Lower class-workers, farmers & peasants constantly being exploited financially Non-Euro-American in Mexico did not own land

3 People Who Want Change La Junta (The Meeting) –Was created as a revolutionary meeting to overthrow the dictatorship –They would published their Liberal Plan about freedom of speech, more power for the people, and nationalization of all church property.

5 People Who Wanted Change Camilo Arriaga –A mining engineer, join a small Anti-Diaz camp. –1900 he called for an organization of liberal clubs throughout Mexico & got together a national liberal convention to meet in San Luis Potosi

6 People Who Wanted Change The Flores Magon Brothers-Jesus Ricardo & Enrique –1900 published Regeneracion weekly in Mexico –They attacked a local politico chief in Oaxaca in the columns of Regeneracion and were arrested several times that after their 3 rd arrest they were sent to exile-United States, where they attack the govt from there.

7 People Who Wanted Change Francisco I. Madero –Came from an elite family, wanted to get involve and help the lower class –After meeting with state governors, he was able to run up against Diaz –His views were very political believe that Mexican president should serve only a single term, social benefits for the people –Diaz administration arrested the Anti-Re-electionist leaders, that included Madero. –Day of the election Madero lost, became furious & join the radicals to fight Diaz’s regime

9 Resignation of Diaz The Anti-Re-electionist party began preparing for the attack Nov 20 even though it began two days earlier The rebels fighting were servants, shopkeepers, beggar, lawyers, students & teachers The rebels would fight any moment they got, they would raid towns, burn haciendas

10 Resignation of Diaz The show down took was on May 13 during a meeting of the new provisional govt. After several attacks and fighting, Diaz finally decided to meet with the Rebels where a treaty was sign by Diaz and Corral, his vice president. On May 25 signed his resignation and the Rebels won. Diaz went into exile in Europe.
