You have just been given a CD that contains MapInfo format data layers of parcels, streets, and target zones. Your supervisor asks you to take a look at the data and display the layers in various colors and label the features. How will you complete this task? In this lesson, you will learn how to: open data in MapInfo format; change the data characteristics (line width, color & fill) so that you may view multiple layers at the same time; label features in MapInfo; display data in different views. What are views of data in MapInfo? Map (display data features- points, lines, or polygons) Browser (attribute or data in fields) Graph (Pie, Bar, Line, 3-D, etc) Lab1: Layer Characteristics

Map Graph Browser Data Views:

How to display a data layer & control display characteristics in MapInfo: To open data layer- Select File> Open (Continued on next slide) 1 2 1 Select File 2 Select Open 3 Navigate to folder that contains data layer 4 In files of type: select MapInfo (*.tab) 5 Select data layer 6 Select Open 3 5 6 4

How to display a data layer & control display characteristics in MapInfo: (continued) To change the display characteristics (line width, color, fill, etc)- 1 2 3 (Continued on next slide) 1 Select Map 2 Select Layer Control 3 Select Display

4. Change the characteristics: Fill- (pattern & foreground) Border- (style, color, & line width) see the sample changes, select OK> OK & the results will display on the map: Layer control: Display (continued)

How to label a data layer using a field value in MapInfo: (Layer Control: Label) select 1 2 4 1 Select map 2 Select layer control 3 Highlight the layer that you wish to label 4 Select label 3 Layer control:Labeling (continued on next slide)

5. Choose the field to label Select the label characteristics: 6. Visibility 7. Style-select text button ( 7a. text color, size, background, effects) 8. Select OK 9. Position of text & offset from centroid 10. Select OK 7a. Layer Control: Labeling (continued) 8 5 6 7 9 10 Layer control:Labeling (continued on next slide)

12. From layer control, select (place a check mark for the layer) in the Auto Label box 13. Select OK and view the results( labels on map): 12 Labeling (continued) 13

Display multiple layers on the same map view: Select File >open, you can open more than one data layer at a time: 1 Select File 2 Select Open 3 Navigate to folder that contains the data layers. Be sure that “Files of type:” is MapInfo (*.tab) 4 Select data layers by pressing Ctrl key & selecting layers 5 Select Open 3 4 5 1 2

Display multiple layers on the same map view: Select file >open, you can open more than one data layer at time can be displayed at the same time using map> layer control>display. The following is a result of opening 3 data layers in the same view and changing the display characteristics to distinguish each layer:

What is a Workspace in MapInfo? A workspace is a set up file that saves: - current settings of all open tables - style characteristics such as color, line width, text style, etc. - map scale or view - print layout settings Why is a workspace important or useful? - Workspaces save you time by remembering all tables that are open and all of their properties. Later, you can open a workspace and not be required to open all the tables and recreate the characteristics of each data layer. How do I create a workspace: - After opening layers, setting display characteristics, Select File> Save Workspace type new name of workspace How do I open a saved workspace: - Select File> Open> in Files of Type box> select Workspace Select the workspace to open- (filename.wor)

You are now ready to begin MapInfo Exercise- Lab 1 Layer Characteristics. The main objectives are: Open different views of data (map, browser, & graph) Change display characteristics of a data layer Display multiple data layers Label attribute (field) values of a data layer on the map You will also use some of the main button tools such as magnify tool grabber tool the information tool (i) Save a workspace Begin exercise- lab 1
