4 Background Info Individual Rightsand human rights It was noted in 1890 that privacy is the “right to be left alone” people determine for themselves when, how, and to what extent information about them is communicated to others Security concerned with the protection and preservation of privacy rights of individuals Property rights

5 Background Examples A survey was put on Facebook that asked whether “President Obama Should Be Killed” it was taken off Facebook, but an investigation could extend to people who participated and their friends How much is the Secret Service allowed to interfere with our lives? Netflix awarded $1 million to a winner of a contest to help predict what movies its customers will like The researchers presented data for over 100 million people birthdates, zip codes, what movies they watched, etc

6 Positive Aspects Keeps personal information safe. A fundamental human right recognized in the UN Declaration of Human Rights. Laws promote electronic commerce. In the US, personal information must be: Obtained fairly and lawfully Used only for the original specified purpose Destroyed after purpose is completed

7 Criticisms Problems resulting from violating one’s privacy can lose one’s valuable information and belongings Facebook violating Privacy Law (article saying that it's ridiculous that one has to give up one’s personal information to take a quiz on Facebook) In order to lessen this problem, one should always keep their valuables with them or in sight and make people aware of how wrong it is to violate other’s privacy and consequences that could result from it.

8 Opinion Despite some benefits, we feel that the negative aspects affect us much more, and therefore, should be careful sharing information with others. What can be done to lessen the problem? Never save your password on a public computer! Do not give away your personal info online Change your password frequently Be aware of frauds—may lead to serious consequences, such as identity theft
