3 2. Managing Data Explain how IS Managers capture, store and analyze data including thoughts on database systems, data warehouse and data mining

4 3. Types of Information Systems Describe the three categories of operations support systems that support lower level management Discuss the four categories of management support systems that support mid and upper level managers

5 4. Computer Networks What is a client-server system and how does it work? Discuss various types of application software used in a business setting Define the two types of network systems used to help managers and employees share data

6 5. Data Communication Networks Discuss the use and differences of the following data communications networks: the internet, the intranet and the extranet What services are provided by an ISP? Describe the four purposes businesses use the internet (e-commerce)

Security Issues in Electronic Communications Discuss some of the data security risks associated with e-commerce Explain firewalls and how they work What are the risks to customers in conducting business via e-commerce? How do “cookies” work? Define encryption and certificate authority and describe their role in protecting consumers

9 Cases and Problems The class will divide into four groups: Group 1 will address the Learning on the Web section of chapter 15 Group 2 will address the Career Opportunities section of chapter 15 Group 3 will address the Ethics Angle section of chapter 15 Group 4 will address the Team-Building Skills section of chapter 15 Be prepared to discuss your answers in your groups in the next class session
