The story of Valentine’s day: A long time ago, a priest named St. Valentine lived in Rome. The king of Rome was named Claudius and he wanted to start a war. No men wanted to join the army because they did not want to leave their wives or children. Claudius was very angry and he figured that only unmarried men would join the army, so he decided to outlaw marriage. St. Valentine didn’t like this idea and he loved marrying people, so he continued to marry people secretly. Claudius’s soldiers found out about this and St. Valentine was sent to jail. Many people would visit him, bring him flowers and show their support for him, especially the daughter of a prison guard. Claudius was so angry that he had St. Valentine killed, but before his execution, he handed the prison guard’s daughter a letter that was signed, “love, from your Valentine.” Every year, people remember St. Valentine for his courage and his fight to allow marriage. He believed that love was very important, so on February 14th, people all over the world celebrate love in honor of him. A long time ago, a priest named St. Valentine lived in Rome.
