More about Nelli portal Since it includes most of the electronic materials which the library subscribes to, why the data is not fully linked to Teemu? Because Nelli’s infrastructure (National Electric Library) is upheld by FinELib (Finnish Electric Library) not Aalto university library. FinELib’s mission is to facilitate the use of electronic materials throughout all finnish libraries by negotiating the contracts for the materials and providing the individually subscribed materials for the libraries. Aalto university library chooses the materials and links them to Aalto’s own Nelli. Nelli portal has a functionality far greater than Teemu’s.

Nelli portal and SFX-linking Nelli portal’s functionality is largely based on SFX-linking service ( ). A single reference:Nelli Use this link to a native database to get the article in PDF-format (if full text is available). (Demo!) opens

Secondary and primary sources in Nelli portal (a simplification) Secondary sources in local collections (Teemu & Tenttu): Secondary sources in electronic collections (Nelli portal): Secondary sourcesPrimary sources Teemu-catalog, which includes the references of the individual books found in the campus library’s collection. The books located and acquired with the help of Teemu (for example). Secondary sourcesPrimary sources Nelli portal itself is a secondary source but it also contains large reference databases like ISI and Scopus, which are very useful for scanning vast amounts of article references. They have other interesting features as well. The full-text articles provided by the full-text databases.

Some interesting functions of ISI and Scopus databases ISI ISI : Journal Citations Reports (ISI) - look up a impact factor and citations collected by a single journal. Scopus:Scopus Tenure track publication analysis - total amount of authors references and h index, etc. Pearl growing search tactic through Scopus and SFX- linking.

Some important functions of Nelli See Nelli quick guide for additional informationNelli quick guide QuickSearch: with QuickSearch you can search from a predefined or self made sets of resources (QuickSets). Databases: search the Nelli portal for suitable databases or other resources. Press -link to get more information about a resource. e-journals: browse electronic journals and search them by name, ISSN number and category. MetaSearch: a tool that simplifies the process of doing a modified multiple database search. My Space: save your references, resources and search histories. Requires a log in with Aalto username and pw.

Using the library’s electronic collection through Google Scholar part I http://scholar.google.com/ Set up SFX in Scholar Preferences -> Library Links -> Select ”Aalto University - FullText: sfx@Aalto” (search with Aalto)

Using the library’s electronic collection through Google Scholar part II After setting up the correct library links you are able to use the SFX-linking services through Google Scholar. This link has the same functionality as the SFX-links in Nelli portal. If Google Scholar is used from off campus, an authentication (Aalto University username and a password) is required before access to full texts is granted.

Off-campus remote access to Nelli: www.nelliportaali.fi part I Enter Nelli portal at www.nelliportaali.fi. Select "Aalto University" from the list of portals when accessing from outside the network. In Nelli portal, select the desired database or e-journal and click on it's title. You will be forwarded to the Aalto log-in page (see picture). Enter your Aalto username and password. Click on the "Login" button. www.nelliportaali.fi

Off-campus remote access to Nelli: www.nelliportaali.fi part II Confirm the transfer of your personal information to the Libproxy remote access system by clicking on the "Continue" button. Your user name is the only piece of personal information to be transferred. You will be further forwarded to the desired resource (database, e-journal etc.). After finishing the remote access session on a publicly accessible computer, please remember to log out by closing the web browser. www.nelliportaali.fi

E-materials - permitted use E-materials are for the use of the students, researchers, teachers and other employees of the Aalto-university. Their main purpose is to support study, research and teaching activities. They are also available for local walk-in users. Permitted use includes: –browsing; searching; printing and saving of reasonable amounts of search results or papers. –E-mailing material to a colleague as a part of scientific communication. –Use in non-commercial teaching material. Find resource specific terms of use in: http://wiki.helsinki.fi/display/FinELib/FinELib-aineistot http://wiki.helsinki.fi/display/FinELib/FinELib-aineistot

E-materials - prohibited use Prohibited use: –systematic or considerable copying or saving of resources. –Commercial use of resources. –Use of programs which automatically search or rake for resources (spider, crawler, robot). –Modifying, applying, moving, translating or creating resources based on the resources provided by the service or any other action violating the copyright restrictions of the resources. –Creating a new collection from the materials provided by the service by systematically saving the whole or parts of the material.

Terms of use - Ebooks and standards Ebooks: –Some platforms have printing and saving restrictions (10-20 pp.) –Please respect the terms set by the publisher! Standards: –No copying allowed of full printed standards –Printing of electronic SFS standards only allowed for teachers and staff –Teachers may only give short extracts to students

Refworks Reference management system Direct export from Nelli and many databases Save attachments, comments Share reading lists with colleagues and students Includes SFX linking Search references by author, journal, subject Organize in folders Use Write ‘n’ Cite with Word to enter references to text Automatically format bibliographies in various styles Use of Refworks is included in the Searching for scientific information -course.Searching for scientific information Schedule an appointment with the with an information specialist, please mention use of Refworks.Schedule an appointment

Web 2.0 Blog on Eresources RSS feeds –News of the library –New acquisitions Other Web 2.0 services –TEEMU & Nelli search applications in iGoogle and Facebook –TEEMU search application in Netvibes –Quick search options for the search bar of your web browser (eg. 21 Forthcoming changes Alli(a working title) - a unified local collection catalog (quite similar to Teemu), but which includes the local collections from all Aalto campus libraries (Arabia, Otaniemi and Töölö). Alli is planned to be taken into use during spring semester 2012. Aaltodoc - a unified document repository quite similar to Inssi-database found in Tenttu, but which possibly helds, for example, candidate, master and licenciate theses from all Aalto schools. It will also include other full-text materials, for example articles and conference papers. Aaltodoc is planned to be taken into use during autumn semester 2011.

Staff and interlibrary loans from the metropolitan area libraries The same set of rules apply to the staff made interlibrary loans from the metropolitan area libraries as to other staff made interlibrary loans. So you should be able to have books from, for example, Helsinki university’s library delivered into your study without any fees. However when making the interlibrary loan make sure you remember to put your responsibility code and inner postal address! I might be also a good idea not to put your student number there at all.

Next searching for scientific information course: Will be held 8.11. (8.30-10.00) in Maari-B Enroll to the course via WebOodi (the enrollment opens two weeks before the course date). Contains also a Refworks-section Questions concerning the course: kirsi.heino@aalto.fi
