Purple Haze Hendrix Chord

From the book Purple Haze to start. This song is entirely based upon E7 – G to A with the end only going to other chords. The E7 is actually an E7#9. In jazz and modern chord harmony it would be considered an altered chord. It has both the minor and major 3 rd in it. The minor 3 rd is the #9.

E7#9 0 X 1 2 3 4 6 th fret. R R 3 b7 #9 Note that most of the time the 9ths and higher parts of the chord are the highest notes in a chord. If you put the #9 below the 3 rd it would sound incorrect or even bad. You can also just play an E7 on this.

The counting on this is confusing but try to feel it instead. Count 1 & (2e&) e 3 & (4 e &) e 1 & (2e&) e 3 & 4 e & e Text book has the introduction. See how it almost outline the chord at times. Again what rules?

Count 1 & 2 3 & 4 This is for both the 1 st and 2 nd endings

X 1 2 3 4 R R 3 b7 #9 #5 Would B7#5#9 Again jazz players call this B7 altered Last chord. But you could also do just a B7 and it would work.

Here is the intro from the book. The book is easier to read but this will do for the overhead. Notice the use of open strings.

Now put it together Use the book page 208 to get the whole thing including the lyrics. Most of the song is just the rhythm given earlier.
