1 Classification of Parasites
Medical Parasitology Classification of Parasites

2 Parasites are Eukaryotes

3 Classification of Parasites
According to their anatomical habitat in human, they are classified into also 2 groups: 1. Ectoparasites ( Parasitizing the skin surface). 2. Endoparasites (Parasitizing the internal tissues)

4 Classification of Parasites
According to their cellular structure: are classified into 2 groups:- 1. Protozoa (Each one is unicellular=composed of one cell). 2. Metazoa (Multicellular= Each one is composed of many cells). NB: Protozoa = Plural, Protozoan= Singular Metazoa = Plural, Metazoan= Singular

5 Protozoa: According to the body systems they are mainly classified into: 1. Haemopoietic parasites. 2. Intestinal parasites. 3. Genitourinary parasites. 4. Cutaneous parasites. 5. Others.

6 Classification of Protozoa
Haemopoietic parasites: 1. Plasmodium species. 2. Leishmania species. 3. Trypanosoma species. 4. Toxoplasma species.

7 Classification of Protozoa
Intestinal parasites: 1. Entamoeba histolytica. 2. Blantidium coli. 3. Giardia lamblia. 4. Cryptosporidium parvum. 5. Isospora belli.

8 Classification of Protozoa
Genitourinary parasites: Trichomonas vaginalis.

9 Classification of Helminthes
1. Cestodes

10 Cestodes (tapeworms) 1. Taenia saginata and Taenia solium.
2. Hymenolepis nana. 3. Diphyllobothrium latum. 4. Dipylidium caninum. 5. Echinococcus granulosus. 6. Echinococcus multilocularis.

11 Cestodes

12 Nematodes (round worms)
Intestinal Nematodes Ascaris lumbricoides Hookworms Enterobius vermicularis Trichuris trichiura

13 Ascaris lumbricoides (adult)

14 Nematodes (round worms)
Tissue Nematodes Wuchereria bancrofti Brugia malayi Brugia timori Loa loa Onchocerca volvulus Dracunculus medinensis Trchinella spiralis

15 Trematodes (flukes) Schistosoma mansoni Schistosoma haematobium
Schistosoma japonicum Hermaphroditic flukes

16 Adult Schistosoma (male and Female)

17 Fasciolopsis buski Adult worm

18 How to write the name of a parasite?
The name of the parasite is written including the genus and the species ( e.g Plasmodium falciparum). The first letter in the genus name is written as capital while the first letter in the species name is written as small letter. (Plasmodium falciparum).

19 How to write the name of a parasite?
Both names of the genus and the species are either underlined or written in italic. Toxoplasma gondii = underlined. or: Toxoplasma gondii= italic
