After the Hebrews conquered the Promised Land, organized and use the Torah for the basis of their Government. In the 11 th century B.C the Hebrews faced a new threat from the Philistines. The Philistines came from across the Mediterranean Sea and settled on the coast

Following the death of Saul, David was chosen as the new King and ruled for about 40 years. He is famous for his battle with Goliath (the Philistine Giant) DAVID founded the important city of Jerusalem.

After the death of King Solomon, the Babylonians invaded Jerusalem and destroyed the Temple of Solomon in 587 B.C The Hebrews were taken back to Babylon and held captive for 70 years. Why would the Babylonians destroy the temple?!

While in Babylon, the Jewish people did not accept the polytheistic beliefs of the Babylonians. They began to gathered in places to worship. Sacrifices were reserved for the Temple, so the Synagogues were used for prayer, which became increasingly important to the Jewish people.
