Let’s Get Ready to go Camping!

The Betsy-Jeff Penn 4-H Educational Center was dedicated May 17, 1964 as a gift from Betsy Penn to the NCSU 4-H program in honor of her late husband Jefferson Penn. The Center’s nearly 200 acres of fields, forests, lakes, and streams were given to the citizens of North Carolina by Betsy Penn, who built the facility and then donated it to North Carolina 4-H in 1964.

The Environmental Education Program provides students in 2nd – 6th grades with outdoor, environmental science and cultural history. Teachers choose from over 20 hands-on, experiential education classes that allow students to be immersed in the subject areas to an extent just not possible in the traditional classroom. Our students will be participating in the following activities while at Betsy-Jeff Penn: 1. Aquatics 2. Beaver Pond 3. Predator Prey 4. Compass 5. Campfire 6. Night Hike

What to pack: This is an outdoor education program. Please make sure that clothing is appropriate. Expect to get dirty. If it is very warm, shorts and t-shirts are appropriate. If it will be warm during the day, please still bring a sweater or jacket. Students can always take off a layer, but if they don’t have one, it can make for a miserable day. For cold days, please bring several layers of warm clothes and long pants. Being outside for a few hours can make an unprepared person uncomfortable, or worse. Be prepared for all weather conditions, including rain. Clothing should allow for a range of movement, and comfortably allow full participation. Students’ names should be on their gear. Students will need to be able to carry their own gear a short distance from the busses to the cabins, so please don’t overpack. Students will not need any additional money to cover fees, food, etc. at the camp. However, they may bring a small amount for souvenirs from the Center store if the teacher makes arrangements for the store to be opened. We recommend no more than $10 - $20. (t-shirts are $12)

All students will eat meals together in the dining hall. Vegetarian options are offered at ALL meals. There is also a wonderful salad bar at lunch and dinner and fruit bar at breakfast. Any snacks MUST be kept in a bag in the dining hall…ABSOLUTELY NO food is allowed in the cabins….or little critters will visit. Food and Snacks

NO ELECTRONICS This means: No phone No iPads No Kindles We are there to be one with nature…if you need us or we need you…ALL teachers have cell phones!
