1 Hawaii Geological Survey Hawaii is the only state without a Geological Survey. Small coastal states like Delaware and Maryland have Geological Surveys to monitor and research natural resources and natural hazards. Currently in Hawaii this is done by an unorganized combination of federal, state, and county engineers, and consultants.

2 Hawaii Geological Survey To provide scientific information to government, business, and the public. Responsibilities of the state surveys differ from state to state depending upon the enabling legislation and the traditions under which the survey evolved. Almost all function as a basic information source for their state governments' executive, legislative, and judicial branches. Some have regulatory responsibilities for water, oil and gas, land reclamation, etc.

6 Hawaii Geological Survey  There is no state source for Earth science information, guidance, advice.  Consequently engineers are hired to do geological research….or  State agencies look over the shoulders of university and federal sources for science information  We are the only state never receiving STATEMAP funds for geological mapping ($6M/yr)  A Hawaiian Geological Survey would unify the splintered role of Earth science in the state and provide a source for mapping, research, public education, and state expertise.

8  Options: –Request study –Request positions in GG dedicated to state service (w/ teaching and research component)  Director-type  Surface hydrology  Slope stability  Global change impacts  Groundwater hydrology  Seismic/volcanic hazards  Geologic mapping/rock resources  Energy and Geochemistry  Study could be submitted as a resolution, relatively easy, perhaps still this year.  Would line us up to request positions next year.
