Match each phrase with its variable expression. 1) Twice the sum of x and 3 2) Two less than the product of 3 and x 3) Three times the difference of x and 2 4) Twice the number x less 3 5) Two more than 3 times the number x a b e c d First, did you box the backwards words??? Self Quiz: Don’t copy, just try these 5 problems

Lesson 2.4 – Translating Sentences into Equations Write this TITLE down on your notes!!! Lesson 2.4 – Translating Sentences into Equations

What is the difference between expressions and equations? A: Equations have equal (=) signs and expressions don’t. Translate the following sentences into equations. 1) Eleven more than a number t is 23. 2) Eight times a number k is equal to 56. 3) Thirteen less m equals 6. The “is” in a sentence is usually the “=” sign Objective - To translate sentences into equations.

Translate the following sentences into equations. 1) Twice the sum of a number n and 5 equals 18. 2) The quotient of x and 2 added to 9 is equal to 13. 3) Six less than 5 times a number x is 39. 4) Forty-two equals 5 subtracted from the product of 7 and x.

Define a variable and write an algebraic equation that represents the situation. 1) The number of animals at the shelter was increased by 20 and is now 185. Let n = the original number of animals n + 20 = 185

Define a variable, write an algebraic equation, and solve. 1) The cost of 5 DS games at t dollars each is $100. How much was each game? Let g = the cost of each game 5 g = 100 g = 20 The cost of each game is $20. Mental Math “5 times what number will get me 100?”

Define a variable, write an algebraic equation, and solve. The Sears Tower is 110 stories tall. This is 8 stories taller than the Empire State Building. How many stories is the Empire State Building? Let x = the number of stories in Empire State 110=+ 8x x = 102 Number of stories in Empire State is 102. Mental Math “What number plus 8 will get me 110? Many backward words will usually use the word “than”, so watch out for it.

Match each sentence with its variable equation. 1) Twice the sum of 4 and x is 5. 2) Four more than the product of 2 and x is 5 3) Four times the difference of x and 2 is 5. 4) Two subtracted from the product of x and 4 is 5. 5) The product of two and x less 4 is 5. c a d e b Self Quiz: Don’t copy, just try these 5 problems

Homework Take out a NEW sheet of paper to start your homework. Use proper math guidelines! p.68 (#16-26, skip #20, #33-38 all) Name Period # 16) Date Remember to write the original problem, then your work, then write your answer
