ENSURING TRANSFER SUCCESS 2015 The University of California (UC) awards unit credit for college courses completed at: United States regionally accredited colleges and universities, or at Universities recognized by the Ministry of Education in another country that offers university- level academic degree program UC’s Transfer Credit Practices

ENSURING TRANSFER SUCCESS 2015 Courses that are transferable to UC must Be listed in the institution’s catalog as offered for the year in which the course was completed, and Include the same or similar content as UC courses, and Require the same or similar prerequisite coursework as UC courses, and Be offered at the same level of instruction as UC courses

ENSURING TRANSFER SUCCESS 2015 Courses that are transferable to UC must: Focus on religion in an objective and scholarly manner Approach religion from a historical and literary point of view that is comparative and cultural Courses from Religious Institutions Approach religion from a dogmatic, sectarian point of view meant to indoctrinate or convert Courses that are not transferable to UC:

ENSURING TRANSFER SUCCESS 2015 Examples: Courses from Religious Institutions Transferable: RELIGIOUS STUDIES St. Mary’s College – CA T&RS 114 THE GOSPEL OF MARK A close study of the Gospel of Mark with an emphasis on its literary, historical, social, and political background. BIOLOGY St. Mary’s College - Moraga, CA General lab science courses Not Transferable: RELIGIOUS STUDIES Criswell College – TX EMS 102 CHURH EVANGELISM Study of biblical basis of evangelism, a brief history of evangelism, and various aspects of a perennial program of evangelism in the local assembly of believers. Particular emphasis given to discipleship and church growth. BIOLOGY Cal Baptist University – CA BIO 173 MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY Analysis of the Greek and Latin components of medical and biological terms; objective of developing skills in word recognition and word building.

ENSURING TRANSFER SUCCESS 2015 Courses that are transferable to UC must: Be completed at a UC-recognized college/university Defense Language Institute, Community College of the Air Force, University of Maryland, etc. Courses offered by U.S. military branches Physical Education Some courses related to occupation training if equivalent to courses offered at UC (e.g. leadership) Courses that are not transferable to UC: How to/practical application vocational courses Recruit/Basic Training, Firefighting, Automotive Repair, Crane Maintenance, Cryptologic Technician, Military Policies Personal Development: managing finances, master chief training, increasing your emotional intelligence, communication etiquette, driving for life Exam Credit: CLEP and DANTES (DSST) Courses from Military Institutions

ENSURING TRANSFER SUCCESS 2015 Courses in Math Courses that are transferable to UC must: Have prerequisite equivalent to intermediate algebra or higher Employ topics of advanced algebra Pre-calculus with intermediate algebra is OK Credit for either college algebra or pre-calculus – limit of 5 semester/7.5 quarter units One year in Elementary Math for Teacher Education may be considered for credit (but not UC-M) Courses that are not transferable to UC: Remedial courses in topics from arithmetic, beginning and intermediate algebra, plane geometry, and trigonometry

ENSURING TRANSFER SUCCESS 2015 Examples: Math Courses Transferable: Green River Community College – WA MATH 106 - ESSENTIALS OF PRE- CALCULUS MATH Study of polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic, & trigonometric functions; algebraic combinations of functions, composition of functions, transformation of functions, & inverse functions. Prerequisite: Completion of HS pre-calculus grade of B average or higher within the last 2 years; or appropriate placement test score; or instructor’s permission. Not Transferable: University of Puget Sound - WA MATH 103 INTRODUCTION TO CONTEMPORARY MATH Intro to contemporary math and its applications; topics from management science, statistics, social choice, the geometry of size and shape, and mathematics for computer science. Topics are chosen for their mathematical importance and critical role their application plays in a person's economic, political, and personal life. Course is not designed to prepare students for further work in mathematics. Prerequisite: One year of high school mathematics.

ENSURING TRANSFER SUCCESS 2015 Courses in Statistics Have a prerequisite of intermediate algebra or its equivalent Include description and analysis of data using mathematical techniques including primarily algebraic methods Focus on the acquisition and understanding of statistical concepts Topics should include: population distribution, probability and testing of hypotheses, significance, and correlations A second course in statistics may be acceptable if content is sequential and not duplicative Found in the social sciences, mathematics, economics and science departments Courses that are transferable to UC must:

ENSURING TRANSFER SUCCESS 2015 Examples: Statistics Courses Transferable: University of North Carolina – NC STOR 155 INTRODUCTION TO STATISTICS Data analysis; correlation and regression; sampling and experimental design; basic probability (random variables, expected values, normal and binomial distributions); hypothesis testing and confidence intervals for means, proportions, and regression parameters; use of spreadsheet software. Prereq: Col Algebra Not Transferable: Dean College – MA MTH 130 INTRODUCTORY STATISTICS Topics include descriptive statistics, measures of central tendency and dispersion, probability rules and probability distributions, the central limit theorem and simple hypothesis testing. Application to real-world problems is stressed throughout the course. No prereq

ENSURING TRANSFER SUCCESS 2015 Courses in English – Composition and Literature Courses that are transferable to UC must: Have prerequisite or examination comparable to the UC Entry Level Writing Requirement Require extensive practice in writing (6,000-8,000 words) Literature courses - prerequisite not required. Children’s literature courses are acceptable as a genre but not as a teaching/selection guide for teachers/parents. Courses that are not transferable to UC: Remedial work in English (focused on topics in spelling, punctuation, and usage, basic structures of sentences, paragraphs, and short essays) is not transferable.

ENSURING TRANSFER SUCCESS 2015 Courses in English - Writing Courses that are transferable to UC must: Have a minimum prerequisite course One course in Journalism is awarded transfer credit Courses may include topics such as fundamentals, history or media studies Courses that are not transferable to UC: Commercially oriented writing courses are not transferable. These types of courses cannot be used to meet the English composition (UC-E) requirement.

ENSURING TRANSFER SUCCESS 2015 Examples: English Courses St. Louis Community College Florissant Valley, MO Green River Community College Auburn, WA International Universities Transferable: ENG 102 COLLEGE COMPOSITION II Focuses on argumentative and persuasive writing techniques; effective writing processes, writing styles, research abilities, analytical skills, and argumentative tools. Prerequisites: ENG:100 or ENG:101ENG:100 ENG:101 ENGL 128 RESEARCH WRITING: SCIENCE/ENGINEERING Composition course with readings; research-based writing in the sciences, engineering and business; emphasizes development of academic research and writing skills; critical thinking including the analysis, interpretation, evaluation, documentation & synthesis of multiple sources & evidence. Prerequisite: A grade of 2.0 or higher in ENGL& 101. If regionally accredited in the U.S. or if the primary language/language of instruction is English: Courses will be reviewed carefully for transfer Not Transferable: ENG 030 INTRODUCTION TO COLLEGE WRITING Improve basic grammar and writing skills, construction of sentences. ENGL 100 INTRODUCTORY COMPOSITION General review of the rules of English grammar and spelling. Designed to prepare students for ENGL 101. If English is not the primary language of country/language of instruction and the institution is not regionally accredited in the U.S. English composition is not transferable

ENSURING TRANSFER SUCCESS 2015 English as a Second Language Only the highest levels of ESL courses, which prepare students for the UC-transferable English composition/literature courses Paragraph development and progression to essay writing is needed. Courses that focus exclusively on listening, reading, or speaking skills are not transferable to UC. Max of 8 semester units of transfer credit for English as a Second Language (ESL) courses that emphasize writing Courses that are transferable to UC:

ENSURING TRANSFER SUCCESS 2015 Examples: ESL Courses Transferable: ESL 221 ENGLISH COMPOSITION FOR NON- NATIVE SPEAKERS OF ENGLISH Intensive and extensive writing in English for academic purposes No credit awarded for ESL courses Not Transferable: ESL 220 ENGLISH GRAMMAR AND COMPOSITION FOR NON- NATIVE SPEAKERS OF ENGLISH Systematic review of English grammar. Intensive and extensive writing of English. A student may earn a maximum of 12 credits in all enrollments for this course. No credit awarded for ESL courses Michigan State University International Universities

ENSURING TRANSFER SUCCESS 2015 Focus on role of business as it relates to the greater society, and Includes topics on ethics, labor, finance marketing, etc. Up to one year of Principles of Accounting allowed One course in Business Law Calculus and some computer systems courses offered through a business department are transferable, if the majority of the content is math or computer-oriented and not business-oriented. Courses that are transferable to UC must: Business

ENSURING TRANSFER SUCCESS 2015 Examples: Computer Graphics/Game Design Courses Transferable: Rensselaer Polytechnic Inst. - NY ECSE 4750 Computer Graphics Intro to interactive computer graphic; emphasis on applications programming; objects & viewers, graphics architectures, pipeline, clipping, rasterization; geometric objects & transformations; texture mapping, ray tracing & radiosity; extensive programming with C++. Not Transferable: Full Sail University - FL Design Integration Crucial part of the game development process, artists, programmers, & designers bring individual components together, and test how they work; explores how the integration process is handled at professional gaming studios, teaching methods for combining the code & art at appropriate production milestones, testing and tracking bugs, and troubleshooting any design issues that arise.

ENSURING TRANSFER SUCCESS 2015 Maximum Limitations on Transfer Credits 70 sem/105 qtr units of credit for lower division coursework from any institution or combination of institutions Units beyond the maximum, can be awarded subject credit and may be used to satisfy subject requirements Units earned at any UC campus are not included are added to the maximum allowed may put applicants at risk due to excessive units Units earned through examinations (AP, IB, and/or A-Level) not included in the limitation do not put applicants at risk of being denied admission
