RATES OF REACTION CHAPTER 17
CHEMICAL KINETICS Branch of chemistry concerned with rates and mechanisms of chemical reactions. Reaction Rate- The speed of a chemical reaction
HOW IS REACTION RATE MEASURED? # of moles of reactant used in a certain time period # of moles of product made in a certain time period
WHAT IS THE COLLISION THEORY? Particles must collide in order to react
WHAT IS AN EFFECTIVE COLLISION? Proper angle and proper amount of energy
WHAT ARE THE TWO FACTORS THAT DETERMINE THE RATE? Frequency of collisions Effectiveness of collisions
ACTIVATION ENERGY Minimum amount of energy needed to start the reaction
REACTION MECHANISM Series of steps by which reacting particles rearrange themselves to form products
EXAMPLE OF A REACTION MECHANISM
ACTIVATED COMPLEX Short lived particles that has the highest energy in the reaction. It either breaks down into reactants or moves forward to become products.
RATE DETERMINING STEP The slowest step in the reaction.
FACTORS THAT AFFECT RATE Temperature Concentration Particle Size Catalyst Inhibitors https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OttRV5ykP7A
Chapter 17 - Chemical Kinetics
Chemical Kinetics Reaction rate - the change in concentration of reactant or product per unit time.
Reaction Rates What affects the rate of reaction?.
Chapter 12.1 and 12.4 of A Natural Approach to Chemistry Reaction Rates.
2. 14 Rates of Chemical Reactions (Sec 9.4 pg
CHEMICAL KINETICS AND EQUILIBRIUM Conner Forsberg.
Kinetics and Equilibrium. Kinetics The branch of chemistry known as chemical kinetics is concerned with the rates of chemical reactions and the mechanisms.
Mini-Unit 12: Reaction Rates and Equilibrium
Controlling Chemical Reactions
Section 2.8—Speeding Up A Reaction
Question of the Day ΔG determines whether or not a reaction will _____, but even a spontaneous reaction can be very _________. Day GO SLOW.
Reaction Rates Collision Theory In order for reactions to occur, particles must collide If collisions are too gentle, no reaction occurs If collisions.
Factors that affect the rates of chemical reactions
Reaction Rates and Equilibrium
Kinetics & Equilibrium. Chemical Kinetics The area of chemistry that is concerned with reaction rates and reaction mechanisms is called chemical kinetics.
Reaction Rates Speed matters! *Watch a Video!*. Reaction Rate Decrease in concentration of reactants with time or Increase in concentration of products.
