Balancing Equations Flip Book

Balancing Equations Flip Book Take two sheets of paper Stagger them and then fold them over like steps. Balancing Equations H 2 + O 2 2H 2 O 2H 2 + O 2 2 H 2 O H 2 + O 2 H 2 O

H 2 + 0 2 H 2 O 1. What is not balanced in this equation? 2. Why do we have to balance equations? 3. What is the Law of Conservation of Mass? Explain it. Reactants Products Law of Conservation of Mass

H 2 + 0 2 H 2 O What is not balanced in this equation? Why do we have to balance equations? What is the Law of Conservation of Mass? Explain it. 1. In this equation, the Oxygens are not balanced. There are 2 oxygens in the reactants and 1 oxygen in the product. 2. We have to balance equations because the Law of Conservation of Mass tells us that matter cannot be created or destroyed.

H 2 + 0 2 2 H 2 O 1. Why was the 2 added before the water? 2. When the coefficient was added what other element was messed up? 3. Why do you have to add a coefficient and not a subscript? Reactants Products Coefficient subscript

H 2 + 0 2 2 H 2 O Why was the 2 added before the water? When the coefficient was added what other element was messed up? Why do you have to add a coefficient and not a subscript? 1.The coefficient 2 was added in front of the product in order to balance the oxygens. 2.When the oxygens were balanced, it messed up the hydrogens in the reactants. 3.The reason we have to add a coefficient is because if you add a subscript, it changes the whole compound.

2H 2 + 0 2 2 H 2 O When you added the coefficient in front of the H 2, what did it do? Is your equation balanced? Why do you have to balance equations? How many oxygens and hydrogens are on each side of the equation? Reactants Products Coefficient Law of Conservation of Mass
