Make a title page for your Reader’s Log Title Your name My name Your class period A picture of the creature for your title page– based on how it is described in the book.

2 2) Prior Knowledge Step 1 - Write down everything you think of when you hear the name Frankenstein (half-page). Brainstorm! Step 2 – Write down other classmates’ ideas about Frankenstein (half-page).

3 3) Frankenstein Vocabulary
Write down the 25 vocabulary words & definitions from the next page. Add the part of speech for each word. Make a guess and use the P.O.S. posters on the wall to help. Write an example sentence for each word. If you are struggling, use the words from the definition in a sentence and then replace it with the vocabulary word. Remember: Verbs usually have “to …” in the definition Nouns usually have “a”, “an”, “the” or end in “ness” or “tion” Adjectives = descriptive words Adverbs often end in “ly”

What year did Mary Shelley write Frankenstein? How old was she? What is the subtitle of Frankenstein? Why did Shelley choose this subtitle? What year does the story take place (approximate century)? Why do you think Shelley didn’t give a specific date for the setting of her story? Where is Walton trying to go and why? What type of mood is created by Walton’s voyage & his letters? Explain how this mood is created. What do you think is the purpose of starting ch.I with Victor Frankenstein’s childhood?

Shelley doesn’t title her chapters, but you can. Create a table of contents for Frankenstein. After you finish each chapter, think of a good title for it & write it on this page. Continued … With whom do you sympathize more – Victor or his creation? Why? Victor has been totally engrossed in the project until he actually brought the Creature to life. Whey do you think Victor’s feelings changed? What do you think is the significance of Frankenstein’s dream about Elizabeth? What future events might it foreshadow? Victor’s personality is repeatedly contrasted with that of his friend Henry. Explain how this relationship serves as a character foil. What are some of the differences between the two characters?

Continued … Nature is an important part of the setting of the novel. Choose a scene that takes place out of doors and analyze the role that nature plays for Victor or the Creature. What do Elizabeth’s reactions to the horrible events unfolding around her reveal about her personality? Support your answer with details from the story. Victor travels into the mountains to gain relief from his feelings of despair & guilt. The Alps are symbols; what do you think they symbolize? In chapter X, the Creature speaks for the 1st time. How does his voice & manner differ from Victor’s voice & manner?

Use a paragraph to answer the following questions: Victor’s immediate response is to run away from the Creature rather than face up to his mistake. Furthermore, when Victor returns to his apartment & finds that the Creature is not there, he does not attempt to find out what happened to it. Describe how Victor could have handled this situation better. Compare what he did to a better course of action. Parental responsibility is a big issue in today’s society. What obligations do you think parents have toward their children? Do you think parents should be held accountable for their children’s actions? Until what age? Why or why not?

What is Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s definition of Noble Savage? Which characters from popular stories could be considered noble savages? Is the monster is a noble savage? Why, or why not? Find a quote from the book that backs your opinion and quote it as part of your answer.

19 15) Nature vs. Nurture The Creature says, “I am malicious because I am miserable,” and he is “shunned and hated by all mankind.” Do you think most people if treated similarly would grow to hate society and want to get even with those who have caused their suffering? Is the monster naturally evil (evil instinct) or is he nurtured to be evil (evil because of neglect & distain from humanity)? Relate the monster’s behavior to a modern example to support your answer.

21 17) Monster Mate? Title this page “Monster Mate?” Fold it in half vertically. Write benefits on the top left & consequences on top right. Divide into teams of 3 & read from p.103 “But my toils drew near…” to the end ch. 17. One of you is the narrator, the other 2 will read the dialogue between the creature and Frankenstein. After reading aloud, answer the questions below. What are the benefits and consequences of making a second monster? Should or shouldn’t Frankenstein make the monster a companion. Explain why and support your answer with 2 quotes from the story.

22 18) Is the Monster Human? Write a page front & back or 2 pages defending your opinion on whether or not the monster should be considered a human. Include specific examples & quotes from the story. Consider the following things in your writing: What argument would Victor make? What argument would the monster make? What makes humans human? What makes us different than animals? Even if he is not human, should the monster be granted basic human rights? Why don’t the people he meets treat him as a human? Does the monster have a soul?
